🌸 One of our rarest plants, the Alpine blue sow-thistle, is making a come-back thanks to some clever 'match-making' to produce healthy new seeds for planting. 📖 Check out the @TheBotanics blog for the full story ➡️ orlo.uk/V0WrW #NatureRestorationFund

Great to be continuing the work with the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh on the re-introduction of alpine blue sow-thistle to the estate. Based on the success of the planting to date, last week a further 250 plants were added to each of the Mar Lodge sites.

Really important piece explaining why @TheBotanics' work on less-charismatic species and biomes is so vital. We expand knowledge of cerrado, savanna, tropical dry forests, monodominant stands, bryophytes, lichens, understorey herbs & fungi, among others! #biodiversity

New Editorial: "Pretty privilege" rdcu.be/dR0Gh Botanically inclined scientists know about plant blindness, the common tendency to overlook flora and concentrate on fauna. But we are similarly afflicted by aesthetic opinions with serious consequences for conservation.

It was an honour to present this keynote, and share @NatureScot work on Gene Conservation Units for trees (with @scavers_at_wk and @thomasgeorgesim), improving habitat for range-edge Great Crested Newts (with @LockettRichard and @ForestryLS), and @AlineRbge's work on Cicerbita!

Session 3 at #ConsGen2024 started off with a keynote by @JeanetteHall9 with case studies of conservation genetics in practice. My personal favourite was the #crested #newt conservation story in Scotland, much to be learnt from this example.

Battling the ongoing threat of Dutch elm disease, Max delivered one 'next generation' elm, the offspring of mature wych elms (Ulmus glabra) known to have survived in areas hit by the disease, to be planted alongside saplings grown in Assynt.
