Light at the end of the tunnel for Grassroots Music Venues. People who say it can’t be done should get out of the way of people doing it. Read our statement in full: instagram.com/p/DCWcvYNNcHN More resources on this via: linktr.ee/MusicVenueTrust

Labour has committed itself to a creative ambition that high quality cultural experiences should be available to all. For grassroots live music, the budget sadly moves that aim further out of reach rather than nearer. We remain committed to working collaboratively to achieve it.

Alexander's Reposted

If that action is not possible for any reason, we will need a new plan of investment to restore what has been lost when the financial conditions allow. This will require direct, very substantial investment by government, and would need to be a central aim of a new cultural plan

Alexander's Reposted

Sadly, those specific characteristics were not, or could not, be recognised in broad brush policies impacting on employment and premises costs. They could, if the will is there, be subsequently recognised now with direct action from @DCMS to address the unintended consequences

This is a very unique part of the cultural infrastructure of the nation. It has specific characteristics which MVT has worked ten years to understand and describe accurately, including space, location, economics, employment practices, ethos and purpose

This predictive model of circa 100 permanent closures assumes that everything we can possibly throw at these new challenges works in as many cases of potential closure as possible. For far too many venues, not even that will be enough.

Alexander's Reposted

This best case scenario would still see 3000 to 4000 job losses in 2025 and over 25,000 performances opportunities per year permanently lost. It would leave many more towns and cities without access to new and original live music and further limit artist touring.

Alexander's Reposted

Based on company structures, prices, significant downturn in jobs, and the generosity of @coldplay @ENTERSHIKARI and @samfendermusic, our best case scenario model would limit permanent grassroots music venue closures resulting from budget measures to a range of 80 to 120.

Alexander's Reposted

We are still working on it, as are they. If the government can’t create specific support that recognises their unique characteristics, a combination of dramatic price rises, ticket levies, discretionary rate relief, redundancies, crowdfunders and MVT donations can reduce closures

Alexander's Reposted

Apologies for the radio silence since the budget last week. We have been working flat out with the UK’s grassroots music venues to see what mitigations, help and support might be available to prevent over 350 (43%) of them closing next year 🧵 👇

Over the next few days, please write to your local MP about the urgent need for action to stop the rise in Business Rates and prevent hundreds of grassroots music venues closing. We’ve made an online resource at bit.ly/MVTgovernment to make this as easy as possible to do so.
