Not bad for the 4th week of October? Unheated polytunnel still pumping out the salads! Mooli, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, courgettes and 2 varieties of cucumber. Last crop of Courgette is pushing the boundaries but now starting to crop.

Look at that glow! Japanese maple (Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’)

Another wonderful #Ginkgo biloba! Backlit and with Muchelney Abbey in the background. #Somerset

Good number of woodcock showing up now that we have had easterly winds and well moonlit nights. (Blackdown Hills, Soms) This looks like a young migrant bird. @woodcockwatch

Much needed winter sun! But from Mahonia x media Winter Sun in my garden now. Pop over to my Instagram account (@alanedown) for more details on this great plant!

It had been a very good year for #autumncolour on Sweet Gum trees! This is an un-named Liquidambar styraciflua which has the best colour it has produced in the last 5 years. It also produces lots of seed capsules.

We shall remember them.

September sown carrots in cold polytunnel looking promising! These should be ready February-March. The broader leaves are self sown pot marigold which I leave to encourage natural pest predators in. #gyo #growyourown

“ When a Clown moves into the Palace, he doesn’t become a King, The Palace becomes a Circus” is a Turkish proverb which is worth heeding in the coming days.

Lonicera periclymenum Graham Thomas pumping out the perfume in November. This young climbing plant is blooming better now than anytime this year! @Newleafplants

Great show from Nerine bowdenii #flowerbulbs in this area! These huge clumps must be quite old and perform year after year! What better way to brighten a murky November? @taylorsbulbs @PlantHerbaceous

Would you just look at the #autumn leaf colour vines produce! It rivals the wine they produce…. well almost! 🍷

Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) has a distinctive fluted trunk, upright habit and good #autumn colour. Coastal Redwood behind on left is actually taller. Both approx 35yrs old and in my neighbour’s mini arboretum. #conifers

Wonderful #autumncolors from this sweet gum : Liquidambar styraciflua Worplesdon. Bought from @GreenshuttersGC who sourced it from @frankpmatthews . It’s even beginning to fruit.

Vitis vinifera Muscat de Alexandria colouring up well inside my greenhouse. Hopefully next year we will get fruit on this young plant.

Under threat of being replaced by what I consider to have the best winter stem colour Cornus alba Sibirica (Westonbirt) is putting on a great #autumn show! Baton Rouge generally has the better stem colour imho!

Perhaps not as good as some autumns (too wet?) but Acer x freemanii Autumn Blaze looks good against that stormy sky in the garden of my great grandparents!
