Closing the #ThamesBarrier requires @LondonPortAuth to halt river traffic on #London's 'green highway'. It frustrated this seal during our flood defence closure a couple of weeks ago, which became too impatient to wait until we were fully open...

Flood Alerts have been issued for high tides this afternoon and tonight. Riverside roads and footpaths will flood at high tide but no property flooding expected.

⚠️ Reminder: A change in weather combined with spring tides coming over the weekend. We expect a Flood Alert to be issued tomorrow with a full #ThamesBarrier closure possible for one or more tides over the next few days. Updates to follow.

Spring tides are back over the weekend, and this could combine with some low pressures to the north creating some tidal surge. I'm on the nights of the weekend to monitor, with Flood Alerts likely from Saturday afternoon onwards.

The end of a very busy shift at the #ThamesBarrier, planning for the high tides this weekend We also thank the rapid response of @MPSonthewater, @LondonFire, @Ldn_Ambulance and @TowerRNLI after a young lady fell into the river close to the Barrier at lunchtime Hoping she’s ok

The #ThamesBarrier is operating this morning for a scheduled test closure. We do this monthly at low tide to minimise the impact on river traffic, while also ensuring our staff are fully trained. Here's a speeded up version ⤵️ x.com/luibhz/status/…

#OnThisDay in 1982, the #ThamesBarrier was fully operated for the first time. It was formally opened by Her Majesty the Queen once construction was completed 18 months later. It has since closed to protect #London from tidal flooding on 221 occasions.

Apparently today is the end of #InternationalControlRoomWeek. Who knew that was a thing? Here’s the view from mine at the #ThamesBarrier. Shout out to all those who had to work an extra hour last night!

⚠️ Another high tide as we’re expecting some tidal surge as a result of #StormAshley, which effectively sucked water away from us last night and is now bouncing back towards us again. Flooding of low lying roads and footpaths for a couple of hours this evening expected.

⚠️ Reminder - high tide upstream of Putney this afternoon due to spring tides and rising river flows.

⚠️ Flood Alerts for the tidal Thames upriver of the #ThamesBarrier have been updated for high tides early tomorrow morning and evening. The tide at 04.00 - 05.00 tomorrow morning may be slightly higher than what was observed this afternoon.

⚠️ Reminder: Flood Alerts in force upriver of the #ThamesBarrier this afternoon. May be slightly higher than what we saw yesterday. With no property flooding expected, we’re not operating the Barrier today.

Typical tidal scenes on Twickenham Riverside... a quick paddle around the @_TheWhiteSwan and through the autumnal virginia creeper curtains! #twickenham #thames #springtides #flooding

Mindful moments on the #Thames #ThamesBarrier

The Humber Barrier was closed last night. Second largest in the UK behind the #ThamesBarrier.

A very high tide tonight but the flood barrier is doing its thing. Hope you’ve had a good day?

We'll be closing the #Dartford Creek Barrier later this morning - the second tide in what's likely to be a run of five. This structure protects around 3,500 properties on the tidal River Darent. It has a lower closure threshold than the #ThamesBarrier so operates more often.

Fog at the #ThamesBarrier Another busy shift with high tides today and tomorrow We’re making plans in case a Barrier closure is required - for now Flood Alerts are in force Will be a very high tide from 14.00 - 16.00 this afternoon in #London, but no property flooding expected

The Thames Barrier is a movable flood defense system located on the River Thames in London. Completed in 1984, its primary purpose is to protect the city from tidal surges and flooding, particularly from North Sea storms. #BillboardPHMainstage #Trending #Engineering #X
