Inspired by this great thread, this weeks #ToolThursday will look at disparities in McDonalds locations with broken ice cream machines🍦. The data was downloaded from mcbroken.com (creds to @rashiq) and can be downloaded here: shorturl.at/evzGN
I ran the McBroken data through the Spatial Equity Data tool. apps.urban.org/features/equit… It found McDonalds are slightly overrepresented in white areas (first image) while locations with broken ice cream machines skew Black and low-income. (second image)
Ever notice how noisy a standard choropleth map can look? Bivariate proportional symbol maps--using symbols that vary by both size and color--can convey all the same info that a choropleth map does but in better proportions, in better locations, and with much less noise...
HUD has released its notice of funding opportunity for the Pro-Housing program, which will fund localities & MPOs with $85 m in grants to remove barriers to affordable housing availability: hud.gov/program_office… whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/…
Very cool to see @mattyglesias & @FAScientists partnering to crowdsource federal policy ideas to boost housing supply! Most of the YIMBY action right now is at the state level and it would be great if we could find more levers to pull in Washington, DC. slowboring.com/p/your-best-id…
