And the official AAUP statement on the overturning of its earlier no-boycott policy is out, with a helpful thread explaining it!
The AAUP has released a new statement on Academic Boycotts, which was written & unanimously approved by Committee A on Academic Freedom & adopted by the AAUP’s governing Council on August 9. aaup.org/report/stateme… 🧵
It bears repeating: it is unacceptable to respond to peaceful campus demonstrations with violent repression. 🧵

Great news from @AFTunion higher ed affiliate @AAUP! Finally, school and campus administrators won't be able to point to the now revoked "no-boycott" policy to shut down BDS activism against Israeli apartheid and genocide.
.@AAUP Ends Two-Decade Opposition to Academic Boycotts In 2005, the AAUP spoke out against this form of protest amid calls for scholars to spurn Israeli institutions. Now, the group says boycotts “can be considered legitimate tactical responses.” bit.ly/3M2TyFZ

More soon on last week's @AFTunion convention! But here is a peak at the mic-drop speech @sherena_ar gave challenging AFT leadership to join National Labor letter (signed by @UAW, @NEAToday, etc) calling for arms embargo against Israel. Full video: instagram.com/p/C-I5GKYSw4j/

The question is, @rweingarten, why hasn't @AFTunion joined our union siblings in @UAW, @NEAToday, etc. in signing onto this letter? Signing onto it, btw, is all we wanted to propose in the friendly amendment we tried to add to the ceasefire resolution (#30) you championed.
“The White House decided to embrace a “ceasefire” by simply redefining the term to mean something else entirely.” Unions just called Biden’s bluff. inthesetimes.com/article/labor-…
This is huge!
*Important AFT Convention Update*: We are delighted to report AFT has divested from all Israel bonds! The International Relations Committee chair confirmed yesterday: AFT no longer holds any Israel bonds & decided not to reinvest in them when last one matured in late 2023.
Some great reporting on our efforts at AFT convention!
"There are educators in Palestine who are asking us, as educators, as their peers, to be in solidarity with them and to intervene in the mechanisms that are enabling that genocide and divestment is the answer.” truthout.org/articles/us-te… We are proud of the work of @Aft4Palestine

Congratulations to the AFT organizers on this news that @AFTunion is not invested in Israeli bonds. Great news! But we can't stop until the union commits to not buying Israeli bonds again. Rank and file members do not want their money invested in genocide.
