In the week when London Climate Resilience was in the news, one tool that gives an indication of the scale of the challenge facing the capital is the Flood Map of Planning. flood-map-for-planning.service.gov.uk The @UKGBC in its most recent review has called for this plan to include new data…

Excellent video from the @guardian about how we engineered rivers to our needs in the 19th century, the impacts of this in a climate changed present/future, and how we can re-introduce natural features to reduce damage from river flooding. #adaptation youtu.be/zkmJRJaPBXE

The @theCCCuk’s most recent risk assessment states that the UK is less well prepared for climate risks now than it was in 2021: “the gap between the level of risk we face and the level of adaptation underway has widened. Adaptation action has failed to keep pace with the…

This is today’s Guardian front page for context btw. It won’t worry the government much in its own right, but the point is it’s very easy to run this type of story day after day, as long as the flood waters remain.

Climate disasters are becoming so common, so widespread, so all pervasive, that they are scarcely reported outside the regions they occur in anymore. Here's what's happened in the last couple of weeks in Australia, UK and Europe:

Warmer, wetter winters are set to be more typical in the UK, with extremes of weather. Our infrastructure is not suited to this - as this week’s travel & flooding chaos shows. Investing in clean, in new infrastructure, in adaptation, is to avoid further unpredictable costs.

Brilliant example. Denuded riparian buffer, grazed to water's edge increase bank erosion and sediments entering the catchment. You don't need to dredge a river to reduce silt, just let it do its own thing.

Before and after photos from one of our habitat restoration schemes. The wood has been added to the river to provide cover for fish and homes for wildlife. It includes live Alder cuttings that will grow into trees. The new fence will reduce grazing to allow trees to establish.

Nature adapts to the crisis we’re creating. It’s intelligence is astonishing but it needs support Please do plant to increase pollinators wherever you can. 🐝🐛🦋🐞🪲❤️

In a "startling" piece of evolution, some flowers are producing smaller flowers & less nectar as they "give up" on being pollinated by scarce insects and turn to self-pollination. This saves the plants energy but reduces long-term resilience. #adaptation #climatechange

$5 trillion of nature-related economic risks will amplify climate change, says Oxford study. A reminder that we are facing huge nature and biodiversity risk, as well as climate risk; and that we need to reduce our impact on all 3 as much and as fast as possible.…
