Today was a good day in setencing through a racial justice lens. The Judge on reading my sentencing note and upon hearing my submissions agreed that the right approach to take when dealing with Black defendants is one which accounts for the effects of racial discrimination.
Today in "My Two Cents on Getting Pupillage": the "dream set" myth. You truly don't know a set until you're a practising member. You won't even have gotten to learn as much as you could from a place without interacting with their members, researching their work -

Completely agree - I was warned that it was a bad idea to ask for pupillage interviews to be via Zoom. I was told it would damage potential rapport etc. However it meant that I was not stressed about being late for any of the interviews, and I could manage my fidgeting better
THIS THIS THIS I did much better in interviews where I got the adjustments I needed. I also now know that my Chambers will be supportive in pupillage & beyond from how I was treated at interview. You aren't asking to be treated preferentially, you're asking to be treated equally

Pupillage Interview Thread #3 Should you practise interview questions and topics with other applicants even though it may give them an advantage over you? I received that question via DM yesterday. The answer is easy. Yes, you should. There are two very good reasons why. (1/6)
More “Hot hints” for those about to start “on their feet” 26. Some courts & tribunals done require you to stand - you’re “on your butt” not “on your feet” 27. Despite 26 above, some judges in those courts ask you to stand -need to check (e.g Coroner’s Ct) 28. If in doubt-stand

This! I was told to make advantage of the fact my invisibility was disabled. However, the interviews that I was open about it ultimately I was much more successful in. I think that this was because I could speak openly about how ultimately it would make me a better barrister.
One thing about the term ‘invisible disabilities’ is that it can in itself invisibilise a person’s experience. Maybe if people were better at recognising the particular signs/experiences for people they know or interact with, then those disabilities would be ‘visible’ to them.
