>1500 scientists from >100 countries agreeing in something is a very rare event. In this opinion piece we joined together to express that if biological nomenclature is not understood as a neutral tool, we put ourselves at risk . Let me explain why we had to organize this 🧵👇

Last week the latest update of the @IUCNRedList was published including over 4,000 new assessments for tree species! This brings the total number of trees on the IUCN Red List to 45,395! bgci.org/news-events/44…

Further to our earlier post (news.mongabay.com/2023/12/newly-…), recently described Tapanuli orangutan and its habitat are already severely threatened, as are conservationists aiming to halt dam development within the shrinking forest of North Sumatra news.mongabay.com/2019/12/fighti… @mongabay

Reaching 40,000 trees on the @IUCNRL would not have been possible without the hard work of all our Global Tree Assessment assessors, reviewers and contributors. A big thank you to everyone who has helped! ow.ly/NfyC50QgHNq

Excited to join @bgci and @MortonArboretum in #teaching #tree #conservation #workshops in Chiang Mai and Hanoi! Look forward to meet existing/new collaborators and join forces to protect and study Asia's amazing #biodiversity 💚🌳! #redlisting #gapanalyses actg.science

There is a need for greater conservation action for timber trees, with only 46% of threatened species found in ex situ collections. Case studies in #RedListofTimberTrees show what @BGCI gardens are already doing to help.

VicForests caught red-handed once again. We worked w/ @WOTCHinc to expose illegal logging of Tree Geebung in areas meant to be protected, during 'regeneration' works. More proof VicForests can't be trusted & must be wound up ASAP. #AbolishVicForests au.news.yahoo.com/endangered-spe…
