2024 was not the first time Sri Lanka🇱🇰 experienced a cultural and generational shift away from established political elites. Here's what Trotskyist and former Finance Minister of Sri Lanka, N.M. Perera, had to say about the post-1956 transformation of Sri Lankan politics: "The…

Good for her. Children are not something you compromise on. If you want them, pick someone who wants them too, if you don’t want them, pick someone who doesn’t. Don’t intentionally go for someone who has the opposite view and try to change their mind.

A girl I know is getting divorced because she made it very clear that she doesn’t want to have kids - to the extent that it’s in their marriage contract. It was their anniversary and she asked him what he’d like (gift) and he said for her to change her mind about having kids 😳

Contrary to this Economist article (economist.com/china/2024/11/…) that is very heavy in "inscrutable Oriental" tropes, I actually think that Xi is one of the easiest Chinese leaders to read. I think at heart the issue isn't so much that "America’s hawks" cannot "get inside the head…

Yes. Yes it's true that the Black Death disappeared without a vaccine. It killed half of Europe's population, but you got me, it did indeed go away without a vaccine.

My mother is in good social care, but the £3500 a month cost means the family home my parents spent a lifetime buying is sold to pay for it.

Governments set up and perpetuate a system that lets private greed leech off public money and they wonder why it all goes pear-shaped.

Funniest thing I've seen here in a while. So many issues in Sri Lanka to tackle but let's take on the urgent, critical issue of too many public holidays which offer a brief reprieve for tired, working bodies in a broken country which relentlessly extracts from its people.

My earnest request is for President @anuradisanayake to initiate a committee to pragmatically look into the excess number of holidays in Sri Lanka. With the kind of mandate that NPP got they can easily make some rational arguments as to why we need to reconsider these holidays.

Your real name is Mileikowsky and you’re from fucking Poland. You have no ancient Hebrew DNA like the Palestinian’s do. 97% of the Jews in Israel have no genetic ties to the land they’ve stolen. That’s why DNA testing is illegal in Israel. The Palestinians are the Semites…

The push for "increased economic output" at the cost of people's personal time will be detrimental to the health & well-being of those of us who are already struggling. After the exhausting few years Sri Lankans already had, can we PLEASE just have the few nice things available

If we reduce 5 of these week day holidays, especially the mid week ones, we can increase the number of working days by 5 days, the number of working days can increase by 2%. People can be paid for these extra days. The increased economic output will make a big difference.

They scream about inclusion until a woman is pregnant and need accommodations.

Georgetown Law has told a pregnant student whose baby is due during exams that she must take the test a few days postpartum, with baby in tow. No early or remote exam since “it would be inequitable to all the other non-birthing students in her class.” docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI…

When I was growing up in the 1970s and 1980s no one saw color. We were all just Americans. Why did that change?
