Now it all makes sense to me (as a programmer). If the entire word list was pre-loaded, then the NYT ran it through a filter to flag "obscure" words and someone manually updated the words that got flagged.
The context is that Josh Wardle pre-loaded the whole 2,315-word list into the browser all the way out to the end of the game in 2027. There seems to have been some sort of glitch today…
