A new ‘Dutch-style’ roundabout - which’s cost £18 million - has opened today at West Bar in #Sheffield. It gives priority to cyclists & pedestrians 🚴‍♀️ 🚶‍♂️ 🚶 Councillor Ben Miskell from @SheffCouncil has been speaking to our Senior Reporter @ChrisDavisSmith about the project:

It might be you, your partner or child. But in reality we don't know who the 489 people were who were not casualties in the 9 months since the national 20mph default was set in Wales. Another reason why the Welsh Government won the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.

In the first 9 months of implementing a national default 20mph limit for urban/village roads, 489 people in Wales won prizes as a result. The prize was being one of the 489 people not being killed or harmed on those on those roads.

Considering how many drivers avoid being fined for speeding, it should really be many more. Interestingly, the online version of this article has a far more provocative headline. I can't imagine why. And Cox is wholly mistaken if he thinks speeding drivers are "law-abiding".

The fuss about Birmingham City Council wanting to set a default 20mph limit is entirely manufactured. Like 60 other local authorities in England, BCC already has a policy of 20mph for most urban roads. It's just seeking a sensible process and signage reg change to make it cheaper…

The "cars = freedom" crowd don't even realise they've been forced into car dependency from the outset.

I'll never understand it. It's like a brain virus. "Cars = freedom" might be the dumbest formulation I've ever heard of in my life. They're so "free" that you need government permission to use them, and they can take it away at any time. Forced to buy insurance, forced to buy…

‘We’ allow this type of so called justice by valuing the rights of the guilty - time off for this or that - but the rights of the victim are diminished at each of these stages. The consequence = limited deterrence - little changes behaviour - lifetime bans are like hens teeth…

In 2022, 5K people were killed or seriously injured in crashes in the UK involving at least one young driver. Graduated licencing could see young novice drivers banned from carrying peer-aged passengers or driving overnight, for the first 6 months after passing their test.
