Hard to believe we still have "serious" people who think like this.

Serious question: Do you feel like you have a good sense of what Harris would be like as president? Do you feel like you have a good sense of what Trump would be like as president?

It’s official! Coming May ‘25. The Economics of Over-the-Counter Markets, w/ @poweill & Hugonnier. A unified treatment of the search-theoretic approach to studying OTC markets. Facts. Models. A technical toolkit. It has it all! Mark the date 😀 press.princeton.edu/books/hardcove…

My back hurts when I look at this.

Waller doing much of the heavy lifting for FOMC since his arrival at the Board. Don’t miss him on CNBC this morning at 11 AM. 💪

I don't know. Who is "we?"

How well do you all think we understand monetary policy anyway?

Canadian inflation at target.

Canada's inflation rate fell back to the Bank of Canada's 2-per-cent target in August, a major milestone after the biggest inflation surge in 40 years. #cdnecon #economy theglobeandmail.com/business/artic…

A quick reminder from your macro professor that the Fed's 2% target is based on PCE inflation. CPI inflation is typically about 0.4 pp above that, so today's 2.5% CPI read is pretty darn close.

This seems wrongheaded, in many ways. You could fault monetary policy during the pandemic, but I don't think the pandemic taught us that we need new policy tools for controlling inflation, or new (and toothless) institutions. theglobeandmail.com/business/comme…

Canada's banking system is a "ruthless oligopoly?" The system may be safe, but it's quite obvious the costs of safety are the usual ones in a concentrated industry. Ruthless? Come on. theglobeandmail.com/business/artic…

Here's Tucker Carlson with 3 Canadian weirdos.

Don’t imagine it will have any impact on his fan club.

Ooof. Horrible news. I overlapped w Paul at Western. He made me think: Paul always had deep insights and a unique perspective. And he made me laugh: Paul had an incredible, dry wit. I’ll remember the wry smile he’d make just before a hilarious (often self deprecating) comment.

We’re deeply saddened to share that our dear colleague and friend, Professor Paul Klein, passed away on August 19. A brilliant macroeconomist and a kind soul with a sharp wit, Paul will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with all who knew him. bit.ly/46ZiYhe

Here we go again. It's the 12-month percentage rate of change in the CPI that is back to pre-pandemic levels.

Canadian CPI now back at pre-pandemic levels. The country is in a recession being masked by immigration. Why the hell is the @bankofcanada taking it so slow? Canada Bank Rate is at 4.75% and needs to be at least 200 basis points lower.

Good argument, I think.

One decent but limited argument for tenure: it lets people vote offers for others who are better. Most jobs do not include hiring and evaluating peers. Tenure is not a lifetime job, it’s a vote at the faculty meeting!
