All four constituencies are ‘missing’ a road. None of them in quite the same way. But all of them in a way that seems to summarise a piece of what it means to live in non-urban Britain these days.
Have been saying for so long that the British social contract, particularly for anyone under 30, is completely backwards. The UK’s current model will take opportunity and prosperity from the young and ambitious, while subsidising everything else.
To be Nick (30) in Britain, is to be a cash cow, milked to subside everyone else — while barely being able to afford your own (flatshare) rent. spectator.co.uk/article/why-yo…
sometimes i get mad and grumpy at my cat for waking me up before i’m supposed to, but then i remember that i do it to her all the time just for a kiss and she’s never mean to me for it… much to think about i guess
150 seconds for each MP to make an argument. For contrast, fox hunting received 700 hours of parliamentary time
Friday’s assisted dying debate is proving popular - I’m told at least 130 MPs have put in to speak. Debate can only last just under 5 hours, meaning an average speech of 2 1/2 mins. Some fear there will be filibustering, others say debate must be thorough - not rushed.
weird, I dont remember there being a sudden general election when the prime minister changed 3 times and Liz Truss tried to implement a load of policies nothing like the manifesto people voted on
Overdue reform to feudal leasehold laws good example of why everything takes so long to get done: consultation paralysis. The new legislation may be needed-but holding another consultation *next* summer? Too much consultation (which protects vested interests) one of the big…
Every single Labour front-bencher today would wither here. They'd start stuttering out some pre-prepared research lines written by some obnoxious 20-something, like a rabbit in the headlights, terrified of generating a bad headline, with all the charisma of a Thameslink…

Bin collections £20 million Parks £15 million Education £80 million Social care/children’s home fees £2billion Sewage £15 million someone who is good at the economy please help me budget this. my local authority is dying
Hampshire County Council is spending 83% of its budget on social care. An official from this same council told the FT a few days ago that they are paying up to £30,000 *per week* – per child – to for-profit children's homes to look after some children.
It’s shocking how much we know about how learning happens, all the way down to the mechanics of what’s going on in the brain. And it’s not just how learning happens, but also, what we can do to improve learning. There are plenty of learning-enhancing practice strategies that…
Why do schools keep chasing every new educational trend when decades of proven research already show us what works? 🧵⬇️
Every Sunday, I play tennis at the Barbican, City of London. The walk from my flat/shoebox takes me past some incredible buildings. Here's a mini guide. First up, St John's Gate. The home of Knight's Templar, it was built in 1504 as the entrance to St John's Priory.
I've mentioned before, but I think about this a lot. "There must be another room, somewhere down the hall, where the real meeting is happening, where the real experts are, making the real decisions ... because it can’t just be us. It can’t just be this." -- Jake Sullivan, 2013
If you're a graduate and you don't earn between 40-50k then don't bother working Any more and the tax is too high, any less and you're better off on welfare What a fucking trap the UK state have created This is my best tweet ever but few will realise
Seriously, this is something else. It will soon be possible to be a graduate on minimum wage in the UK and face a 37% marginal tax rate (20% income tax, 8% NI, plus 9% uni fees repayment). Throw in auto-enrolment at 5% and 6% loan repay for postgrads and it's 48%
Apparently, Labour got the estimate of how many students would leave private schools badly wrong, as 3,000 (0.5%) have applied for state school. As opposed to the <checks notes> 225,000 or over 40% exodus the Telegraph warned of before the election. These people have no shame.

Free school meals for all primary school children in London cost £130 million in 2023-24. We cannot kept throwing money at obscure planning regulations at the expense of quality of life for working people.
HS2 was forced to spend £100m building a bat tunnel despite the fact there's "no evidence, by the way, that high speed trains interfere with bats." theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/n…
Amazing footage of Trump live dictating his posts to fire out during a Kamala speech. Definitely a rare approach for a world leader 😅
