AIR QUALITY UPDATE: While forecasting air quality is challenging and often unpredictable, we anticipate that conditions in NYC could deteriorate — getting worse on Thursday, June 29 — due to wildfires in Canada. Here's what New Yorkers need to know: on.nyc.gov/3Xskgws

⚠️22x—New York City currently has the worst air quality of all major cities at the moment—with toxic PM2.5 levels now 22x worse than WHO guidelines. Get #HEPA filters for indoors and use N95 or P100 masks if you must go outdoors in the orange haze. iqair.com/usa/new-york/n…

Breathing the air for longer than an hour without a mask outside is like CHAIN SMOKING A PACK OF CIGARETTES 🚬…. be safe folks—either stay indoors & get a HEPA filter, or wear a minimum N95 mask or better yet a P100 mask if you must go outside. #MaskUp #HEPA

Normally, the Queensborough and Triborough bridges are visible. NYers stay inside if you can. I’ve never seen anything like this here in NYC all my life, and I was born in Manhattan. What have we done to Mother Earth?🥲💔

If you or your kids have red, itchy or sticky eyes, it may actually be the latest #COVID19 variant, XBB.1.16 (#XBB116). Do a test. This is a symptom we didn’t see often with past #COVIDvariants, so it’s easy to mistake it for allergies. #MedTwitter nbcnewyork.com/news/local/new…

Be kind. Stay steady. Help someone. Check in on an old friend. Listen to your favorite music. Have a good weekend.

6) We do believe that the #BA5 bivalent booster should mostly work against #BQ variants because BQs are descendants of BA5. The neutralization data on BA5 by @yunlong_cao supports it. But only if people take them.

6) Million dollar question — so does the bivalent #Ba5 booster shot work against #Q1 and #BQ11? I *think* so… BQ are subtypes of the BA5 branch family. And in neutralization studies of BA5 infection (akin to ~BA5 booster) by @yunlong_cao, BQ sub variants still neutralized well.

P.s. I plan to stay on Twitter. But I plan to migrate and share more to Substack in the near future: drericding.substack.com

How the hell does US have 9x & other European countries have 4x-8x the #COVID19 mortality rate as Japan??? ➡️Japanese have a long & well-established tradition of wearing masks. At least half of 🇯🇵 population is planning on wearing masks for the foreseeable future. #BringBackMasks

Threads like these are the reason I’ll probably never leave Twitter. This is the equivalent of finding a $20 in your pocket for my fellow curiosity-seekers. #ScienceTwitter

Ok folks. It’s time we talked about eels. I’m a geologist but I recently learnt about eels and… wow. Since then, I’ve been greeting strangers with ‘DO YOU KNOW ABOUT EELS?!’ Well, consider yourself a stranger in my path. Strap in. It’s a 🧵 1/so many

Parents, be aware. This is not from 2020. It is now. I can’t believe children’s hospitals are headed back to this place, & it’s not even winter. Please get your kids back in masks & #vaccinated w/ a #FluShot & an updated #COVID19 #booster. 🙏#MedTwitter goodmorningamerica.com/wellness/story…

An isolation period of 5 days after Covid is totally inadequate for most people. New report from >63,000 people. Negative rapid tests are an essential guide jamanetwork.com/journals/jaman… @JAMANetworkOpen

“Those who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it. Those who do study history are doomed to stand by helplessly while everyone else repeats it”. ^How I feel about this fall/winter #COVID surge. HT to whoever is the artist.

Perhaps. But this further suggests why the CDC director should not be a political appointment. The missteps of a president are intrinsically linked to the missteps of the CDC as long as CDC is, effectively, a representation of the presidents administration.

We know #COVID is back. We see is across Europe already in surging hospitalizations. The US has always been a few weeks or a month behind. Boston wastewater surge doesn’t lie. #CovidIsNotOver

MA COVID wastewater levels took a big jump in recent days - no state case/hospitalization reports since Thurs given weekly state reporting. But it’s clear that we are on a rapid upswing. Plan accordingly.

The mild disease that causes a 1900% increase in risk of heart attack, stroke or pulmonary embolism in the week after infection. Don’t worry, after a year your risk is only increased by 30%.

I expected better. As an infectious diseases doctor, an American, and a human, I am profoundly disappointed in my President. And I am less optimistic for the future of our country than I have been in recent memory (end)
