This town looks like a good place to spend the night. How about we call it a day? Our sudden departure didn’t allow for much sleep last night.

I wish I could have managed to bring my swords. But dressed as a Buddhist pilgrim, a dagger will have to do for protection on this trip.

I think that is plenty for today. How do you feel?

Well done O-Hatsu. Do you feel up to some sparring? Unfortunately, we could very well find ourselves in a fight at some point on this trip.

Her form looks quite good. Sumako has done an admirable job of grounding her in the basics. Her footwork is particularly impressive, considering how new she is to the naginata. She is well on her way to becoming a fine Aizu warrior.

What do you think O-Hatsu? This looks like an ideal place for a spot of practice. How about you show me your naginata form? You can use your walking staff as your practice weapon.

This temple looks like a candidate for a well-stocked supply of pilgrimage supplies.

We will bypass Edo by taking the Nikko Wakiokan Road to Nikko. As we get close to Nikko, I expect needing to take a significant detour to avoid getting caught up in the fighting between Aizu and imperial troops. From Nikko to Aizu, we will take the Aizu Nishikaido Road.

O-Hatsu, I am afraid we must leave tonight rather than waiting until tomorrow morning.

Thank you for your patience you two. The abbot was very informative. I think now we have a good idea of how to get to Aizu.

Good morning O-Bun, Daigen. How nice to see you both. Daigen, you are just the man I need to speak with.

Perhaps Takeyoshi made it to Aizu. Wherever he is, I hope he has been able to come to terms with his anger.

Aizu commander Yamakawa Okura is holding fast at Nikko. But Imperial troops have entered Echigo and are attacking Nagaoka Castle. Shirakawa Castle has fallen. The imperial troops will likely use it as their base and try to enter Aizu from the south.

The conversation I overheard at the clinic this morning was very disturbing. It’s clear I can no longer linger here in Hachioji.

For today’s calligraphy practice, you will be writing the characters for the five Confucian virtues. O-Hatsu, please read them aloud.

For this morning's lessons I am trying something a bit unconventional. Partly in response to O-Bun's request for new material.

Alas, it would seem my free-and-easy lifestyle came to a close once we reached Edo. And beyond that, who knows what awaits us in Aizu.

For the record O-Bun, I was a poor student. My father and I frequently clashed over what he called my lack of discipline. By the time I graduated from Nisshinkan, I was a restless, unhappy young man. A few years later I decided to leave Aizu.

You know O-Hatsu, you meeting someone from my hometown has me reminiscing about my own student days at the Nisshinkan School in Aizu.

I need to express my thanks to both of you for finding this place. My injuries seem to be taking a very long time to heal.
