Empathy is at the heart of great communication. If we are going to craft a message that resonates with our audience, a key step is to be able to put ourselves in their place and think about what they most need to hear and how they want to hear it said.

Dear friends who write NSF GRFP rec letters, this year rec letters are due BEFORE the applications, so about 10 days earlier than normal on Oct. 11. Please don't let NSF's deadline change on rec letters screw over the applicants in your lives.

When we talk about "academic leaders" that usually means people with titles like dean and president. However, if you are a faculty member running a research group, then you also have a leadership job...and there's a good chance you weren't trained for it. insidehighered.com/opinion/career…

If you’re choosing a research group to join, pay just as much - if not more - attention to the culture and mentoring style in the group than the research. You can succeed in lots of research areas or projects, but it’s tough to succeed in an unsupportive environment.

As a research mentor, it’s common to see someone whose project is not working but they are doing all the right things to troubleshoot. Don’t underestimate the power of saying “Even though your experiments are failing, you are still succeeding at research.”

The people who we mentor are not us and their goals are not usually our goals. So, instead of focusing on what we would do, we can help them focus on what they should do in light of: -their priorities -their choices -their strengths -their path

Academia definitely has challenges. However, it also has a lot of wonderful people who are in it for the goal of supporting and uplifting other wonderful people, and seeing that happen makes me smile.

Words make a difference. Whether I'm sending an email to students, staff, or faculty, I start with "Dear Colleagues" No matter what our education background, titles, or job duties, we are all colleagues and should treat each other with the respect inherent in that word.

Student: Is this graded? No? Great! I am more able to learn when I do something that's not graded. Me: But, remember last week's non-graded assignment that was only for feedback? Why didn't you submit it? Student: Because it wasn't graded? 😬 >> Grades are complicated, y'all

Those of you who follow New Mexico basketball may have noticed I haven’t been playing or anyone who knows me may have noticed I have been so distant from everyone and there is a good reason for that.  I have struggled with depression off and on since high school. I was diagnosed…
