As a developer, I miss the discipline of knowing there was no way to “fix” a game once it had been manufactured. The “Day Zero Patch” mentality today just encourages poor development and management practices, and it’s a worse customer experience too. #gamedevelopment
We released gta San Andreas 20 years ago. October 26, 2004. Game releases were different back then. It took 6 weeks for the DVDs to be produced, boxed and distributed. Patches over the internet were not yet a thing. For us, all of the stress had happened at the cut-off point, 6…
Colin Anderson ran the audio dept during the development of gta and gta2. Colin and Craig Connor came up with the idea of the radio stations in gta. It seems obvious now but at the time it was wild.
One of the questions I still get asked most about #GrandTheftAuto is how we initially came up with the idea for the radio station format. Here's the answer I gave @AbertayUni alumni Dr Kenny McAlpine for his online course in 2017. Full video: futurelearn.com/info/courses/v… #GTA #GTA25
20 years ago we released Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas. The original plan was for the 3 cities to be on separate maps. The player would travel between the cities using trains and planes. (Gta 1 and 2 also had three cities on separate maps) Memory was very tight on the ps2 and…

Task locals are what made our Dependencies library concurrency safe from day one, and even today it’s the only dependency injection library that compiles in Swift 6 mode with no warnings/errors and no ‘nonisolated(unsafe)’.
Swift Concurrency allows us to use something called "task local values". It's actually the feature that drives much of @pointfreeco's dependency library. Learn everything you need to know about task local values in this post: donnywals.com/what-are-swift…

I’ve been watching Andreas’s streams for years, and I never imagined that one day he would choose my favorite language, Swift, for these projects and even he prefers Swift over Rust. Swift truly is powerful
We've been evaluating a number of C++ successor languages for @ladybirdbrowser, and the one best suited to our needs appears to be @SwiftLang 🪶 Over the last few months, I've asked a bunch of folks to pick some little part of our project and try rewriting it in the different…

This week’s episode shows how to accomplish something in UIKit that many think is only possible in SwiftUI: State-driven navigation 🤯 We will show how to drive alerts, sheets, popovers, drill-downs, and more, purely from state and all in UIKit. 👉 pointfree.co/episodes/ep284…
One of the amazing things SwiftUI brought to apps was the ability to animate state changes rather than manually animating properties of a view. But there's no reason we can't do the same in UIKit, and that's exactly what we do in this week's episode! 👉 pointfree.co/episodes/ep283…
