This is a great England team, probably the best of my adult life in terms of the quality of the individual players in its spine (Bellingham, Saka, Rice, Stones, Foden). At the moment the whole is significantly less than the sum of the parts, but our time will come. Quality wins…

My piece for @thetimes on Keir Starmer’s international debut, the final of #EURO2024 - and why the much-abused ECHR is a source of patriotic pride for our new PM. thetimes.com/article/starme…

Wonderful to hear all the tributes to Michael Mosley on the BBC today. At Short Books, we worked with him for more than a decade publishing his amazing titles. Very moving to see how much everyone continues to love his incredible work #JustOneThing

A subtle England penalty shootout innovation (since 2021) is their deliberate, structured & functional use of social psychology. Here, Saka is picked up by John Stones after his penalty, to swiftly welcome him back in the team. What did England do and why did they do it? 1/7

As in 2021, Pickford handed the ball over to English penalty takers, but with a twist - he then re-entered the penalty area together with his teammate, staring down the GK, to create a 2v1 situation against him. Maybe too effective? The referee disallowed it from then. 6/7

Don't get caught in the narrative that a penalty shootout is only about individual skill. It's an emotional & volatile event where structured social support to help each other buffer stress may make a difference. See much more on this in chapter 4 in my new book: Pressure. 7/7

Five perfect penalties, cool and brilliant - and a marvellous save - and England through to the semifinals. Want to know how they did it? Read the football book of the year, Pressure by Geir Jordet, and you will find out everything about the biggest moment in all sport.

Ivan Toney didn't even look at the ball. He just stared the keeper down.
