What separates civilised societies from pre-civilised ones is the idea that the lives of people who are ‘burdens’—the young, old, sick & disabled—are just as valuable as those who are ‘productive’. Implying that being dependent makes a life worth less is the opposite of progress.

Dan covers tax, not a particularly exciting subject, but I always find his analysis fascinating.

New data on farms and inheritance tax: a third of farm estates over £1.5m aren’t farmers but wealthy people avoiding IHT by sinking money into farmland. The Budget hits farmers too hard and tax avoiders too lightly. It needs to change.

You should all retweet this shocking thread and tag in @AXAUK - what a cruel way to behave. Jane is lucky to have Cat fighting for her best interests. I wish them both an easier time during Jane’s treatment and recovery - and for AXA to behave with a modicum of humanity.

1. I don’t often tweet about my personal life, but on 1st November, my mum Jane was hit by a large vehicle as a pedestrian in St. Louis, USA. She suffered a severe brain injury & remains in a coma in hospital. Here's Jane & me in happier times.

Current politics seems to be that some bloke called Rupert inheriting a farm is terrible but an offshore multinational buying it up is progress

While I've not cooked this version of Mapo Tofu yet, I am a confirmed carnivore, and have to admit it is one of my favourite dishes of all time.

Latest chapter, a very short witter, on my @fuchsiadunlop Invitation to a Banquet cookalong, is up now up! Satisfyingly savoury, tongue- numbingly tantalising, and soul- stirringly feisty-soothed by the slippery joy of tofu. That’s right, it’s the supremely wonderful mapo tofu!

Let’s be clear: you don’t have any “pain” here at all. You are a privileged man living in the UK with absolutely nothing at stake. It is not your loved ones who are being raped, enslaved and killed, nor your cities that are being erased. Sit down.

If you think this is about my pain, rather than just a concern about the future existence of human civilisation when I don’t believe this decision will mean Ukrainian victory, I don’t really know what to say!

Fun to watch tax experts slowly realise how broken the food economy is. Assets of £millions return less than 1%..! That can’t be right!! Oh yeah; trust the experts!

Told my dad (66) about incels. His response: “Since the beginning of time, funny-looking dudes have been getting girls. Short guys, guys with no chin, guys with a small wang, it doesn’t matter. Be nice and make ‘em laugh and you’ll find a lady.”

Omg they did a male version of the ‘secret vote’ ad and it’s even better than the female version.

Why might there be a delay in the details of a police investigation being made public? Well, many reasons. None of which relate to a conspiracy or a “cover-up”. Let’s take a quick look🧵👇

The BRICS do not represent “half of the world’s population” because in dictatorships and authoritarian systems people’s interests are not represented in the governments.

I’m on my way back from Kazan, where I once again attended the Outreach session of the Summit of BRICS that represents nearly half of the world’s population. In the session, I called for a just peace in Ukraine in line with the @UN Charter, international law and General Assembly…

God what a terrible decision coming hot on the heels of the Newsnight fiasco

THREAD: 1. PERSONAL NEWS: Today BBC News has announced plans to close @BBCHARDtalk after 3 decades holding the world’s politicians and powerbrokers to account. This is sad news for me personally, but much more important, I think it’s depressing news for the BBC🧵

One of my favourite aircraft of all time. It was the subject of my 30min presentation in Phase One @DartmouthBRNC so many moons ago.

#OnThisDay 1945 the last 'service' launch from a @RoyalNavy carrier by a Fairey Swordfish took place from HMS OCEAN. Though HMS CENTAUR launched 2 in 1959 during the filming of Sink The Bismarck. In WW2 it destroyed more enemy maritime tonnage than any allied aircraft.

He's not wrong, but I don't think many people will pay any attention to this...

My stark, heartfelt message to the American voter on what happens if Trump wins, from Ukraine—please boost to punch through the algorithms:

Please let folk enjoy the films, books, music, art, tv they enjoy. You didn’t like it, fine. You think it’s bad, the worst thing ever, okay. Not everyone likes the same things, but feel free not to tell the enjoyers they’re wrong for taking pleasure in what they like.
