I think Kidman has earned enough respect not to be spoken of so dismissively. There are often one or two good secondary female roles in Scorsese’s largely male films, Jodie Foster once observed he rarely invites women back like he does men. It’s not controversial!

When he asked Ellen Burstyn to star in ADLHA, she told him that based on previous work, she didn’t think he understood women. He agreed w/ her & said that was why he wanted to make the movie. That conversation convinced her to take the role.
