There is still a border of snow along the drive, but elsewhere there are open fields, and the grass beneath the trees is bare. Respite!

Duck's foot paddling suit from Germany (1929). Very sexy. I can't think why it didn't catch on.

An account of this novelty (Popular Science, Jan. 1929) set me on a nostalgic quest for a slide rule. Only the circular ones, and the aeronautic plotters seem to be available. Should have saved mine...

Grok, what would I look like as a caveman? Oh...the same, then.

Hurrah!

The whole point of the recent education reforms was to ensure schools stopped getting kids doing a ton of useless courses OR just target English/Maths as it was often done, pre2010. Eight or nine GCSEs ensures a decent spread and prepares kids well for the future. It gives them…

The 1956 GM XP-500 prototype was the first free-piston engined car. Designed by Swiss engineer Robert Huber, the engine sent a stream of expanding gas to a turbine driving the rear axle. Unfortunately, starting, lubrication, and control issues could not be overcome.

I'm occasionally surprised to find I have unfollowed someone, and then I realize it was because they were antisemitic. That's a straight unfollow and block for me, as I am sure it is for many others.

A bright, sunny, but rather cold day, with a high of -9C. Lots of snow clearing.

Have you ever found the plots of Hollywood films rather...mechanical? There may be a good reason for that. Introducing Arthur F. Blanchard's "Movie Writer," patented in 1916.

The big story for Popular Science in March 1960 was the Wankel engine! Felix Wankel designed a rotary compressor in the '20s and realized that by adding intake and exhaust ports, he could produce an internal combustion engine of unmatched compactness....

In 1956, Popular Science found the RP-71 Falconer interesting...but in fact it was revolutionary. Following WW2, Northrup acquired remote controlled target maker Radioplane, which built the U.S. Army’s first unmanned reconnaissance aircraft, and the rest is history.

In 1949, Daniele Gasperini and Ferruccio Grassi founded SOMOR and perfected a solar pump. Efforts to launch it in the US in the 1950s foundered, but in 2014, NOVA SOMOR was formed to revisit the technology with new materials...step aside, photovoltaic!

It took five years and $2.5M to develop the T101 into the air portable M56. Almost unarmored, it ran on eight pneumatic road wheels! It was thus one of the few tracked vehicles to risk a flat tire....
