We're excited to be kicking of the spring meeting of our Emerging Poverty Scholars, and are grateful to @HHS_ASPE for hosting us! First up: @DrCDNichols of @txstla @TXSTHistory sharing her research on "Motherhood Menace: Black and Brown Women's Activism as a Politics of Love."
Moving on to our second panel of our Emerging Poverty Scholars gathering, we're hearing from Dr. Alberto Ortega @berto_econ of @IUONeill @IUBloomington @ASHE_ASSALosing discussing "Losing Medicaid and Crime," looking at the impact of losing health insurance on criminal activity.
We're learning a lot from IRP Emerging Povery Scholar Dr. Monica Adams of Binghamton University who is discussing "Food Insecurity within the LGBTQIA+ Community." She's sharing findings from a scoping review conducted to describe food insecurity within the LGBTQIA+ community.
We're back for a panel on employment and housing, and we're getting started with IRP Emerging Poverty Scholar @Daniel2Auguste of @FAUArtsLetters discussing "Where You Start and Your Race Matter: Labor Market Inequlaity and the Entrepreneurship Earnings Penalty Puzzle."
IRP Emerging Poverty Scholar Dr. José Loya of @UCLALuskin is presenting his research on "Ethno-Racial and Relative Neighborhood Income Disparities in the Mortgage Market," showing how unequal access to homeownership is a major aspect of ethno-racial stratification & inequality.
Important research by Dr. Karina Chavarria of @csuci @UCLA_CSRC on "Legal Vulnerability at the CSU’s: Undocumented College Students’ Engagement with Campus Services" and how financial challenges & social exclusions shape awareness of, access to, and use of available supports.
It's not easy to be the final presenter of the day, but Dr. Andrea Gómez Cervantes @AndreaGC_soc of @wfsocdept @WakeForest is definitely holding our attention with her talk on "Esperando in Confinement: Liminal Illegality as Central American Women Await an Asylum Decision."
