A number of people have been asking*, so I figured it was about time for the 2024 edition of "how to make nice LaTeX tables with R"! patrickbaylis.com/posts/2024-04-… * Technically speaking, zero IS a number.

The latest from @headecon: New research has mapped the costs of protecting homes from #wildfires to show they are highest in rural parts of the western US where density is relatively low. bit.ly/3lfSbcP
What @DrNathanNunn said! Also, we have some incredible (and incredibly nice) recent faculty hires...
Thinking of doing a PhD in economics? A little under 2 weeks to apply to UBC's program. Dynamic faculty, great mentorship, fun research environment, amazingly diverse group of students, great city. What's not to like?
For the ultrarunning nerds, some stats and analysis in advance of the incredibly stacked #UTMB later this week. Writing by the incomparable @MountainRoche, stats by me. trailrunnermag.com/training/trail…
Why are there so many small-scale vendors in developing country cities? Some new evidence with Banerjee, @GregFisch, @deankarlan, @BenRothEcon: mattlowe.site/wp-content/upl… 1/
Quick thread on a paper we had out last week on wildfire smoke in @NatureHumBehav Take-home is that current policy approaches to protecting folks from wildfire smoke exposure are pretty inadequate. Paper here nature.com/articles/s4156… (1/n)
Yes, please do! Besides the very funny @hmmlowe and the less-funny me, other wonderful colleagues also hiring: @juhreka13, Heather Sarsons, Victor Couture, Gorkem Bostanci, @GiovanniGallip1, @munirsquires, @JamieMccasland, Samuel Norris, and Sam Hwang
Come work with us! @pbaylis and I are hiring someone interested in any combination of devo/enviro/behavioural, and others are hiring too [1/2]
#HiddenCurriculum is back for another season! And, to keep the bar low (I assume), I'm the first guest. Super fun conversation with Alex and Sebastian about developing work habits that allow you to be productive AND enjoy your life.

Absolutely thrilled to be heading up the hill for this discussion with @SFU_polisci! Even more thrilled to see the rest of the talks in this series, which really look amazing (thank goodness I don't have to follow them)
The first talk in our Social Data Analytics Speaker Series is coming up on Tuesday, March 1st (12:30 PM)! Register today to hear @ubcVSE Professor @pbaylis discuss, "Assessing the impacts of environment hazards with text analysis." eventbrite.ca/e/assessing-th… #sfupolisci @SFUFASS
When @grant_mcdermott writes a blog post that solves a problem I am literally tangling with at _this very moment_ it becomes very hard to believe he doesn’t have cameras in my home. I’m onto you, McDermott
New wildfires/adaptation WP with @JuddBoomhower: We find that CA wildland building codes starting in 90s had big effects on the probability of home survival in a wildfire, but very few other places in the West have similar requirements (even today). Any feedback is appreciated!
New nationwide data on wildfire losses show resilience benefits of building codes for homes and neighbors. Market failures appear key to low take-up of mitigation in no-codes areas, from @pbaylis and Judson Boomhower nber.org/papers/w29621
Do you like population-weighted weather data? What about the timeless classic film Point Break? If you answered yes to both questions, then I have got a blog post just for you: patrickbaylis.com/blog/2021-08-1…
We're hiring a full-time research assistant! @hmmlowe is much funnier than I am so please read his tweet.
.@pbaylis and I are hiring a pre-doc for 2021/22! Details here: economics.ubc.ca/cider/work-wit…. The pre-doc will work mainly on environmental and behavioural econ. [1/3]
Most tables in academic papers suck (mine included). Can we make them suck less? Today, I tried. If you've ever wanted to make simple, clean data summary or regression tables using R + TeX, I have just the post for you: patrickbaylis.com/blog/2021-05-3…
Thank you for having me!
