We just submitted our paper on the rise of Serfdom in Russia (joint work with @Natkhov), and we're very proud of the result. I am going to start here a long thread explaining the paper (I will add little by little as I have time)

1. Super interesting new NBER paper on "Covid and Cities, Thus Far by Gilles Duranton & Jessie Handbury. Worth a quick thread on its main thrusts: nber.org/papers/w31158

#WFH and #Covid contributed to the unprecedented 2.5% growth in the number of households in 2021. This is important to take into account when studying the effect of #WFH on house rents and prices. This new paper does exactly this.

*New research* If remote work caused population loss in big expensive cities, why did their rents and house prices go up? My new paper with @ecarl_economics suggests one answer: household formation! eig.org/wp-content/upl…

#WFH reallocates demand from commercial to residential real estate. This great NYT infographic shows visualizes some issues with converting offices to apartments: nytimes.com/interactive/20…

Hybrid work is much less pronounced for older workers: 20-29 year olds do more than twice hybrid work compared to 50-64 year olds.

WFH Research Updates: April 2023 - mailchi.mp/d7be18c32c7f/w… Time spent on mentoring is greater when employees commute to the workplace. Older workers over are more likely to be fully remote or fully on site.

Does anyone know where to get shapefiles for municipalities (cities, towns, etc) in California since 1850? Counties are easy but we need municipalities. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. Thanks! #UrbanEcon

As Russia plunges Ukraine into darkness, this is enabled by Western tech. Products from #Google, #Microsoft, and others underpin RU economic activity and its war machine. This needs to stop. My new piece in @latimes with @hodsonlabs and @YGorodnichenko: latimes.com/opinion/story/…

During this season's Christmas spending spree, please consider sending a gift to #Ukraine

My christmas gifts go to u24.gov.ua this year. You can also help shoot down some Russian drones and provide other lifesaving support.

Russian "technocrats" enable the war. They share responsibility for death&destruction in #Ukraine. "Patriotic duty" is to stop the war, not to kill Ukrainians. Remember: Walther Funk (president of Reichsbank in Nazi Germany) was convicted at Nuremberg. ft.com/content/fe5fe0…

We are just $800 short of completing the fundraiser and buying holiday goodie bags for 600 children in recently liberated Kherson. Make difference today: gofundme.com/f/holiday-chee… #Ukraine #Kherson #UkraineRussiaWar
