The two party system was never "built" at all. Arguably the Constitution's biggest flaw was refusing to acknowledge parties would even exist.
The main reason American politics feels so unstable and based upon incoherent political coalitions is because the two-party system was built for a society with much simpler demographics. After 1965 immigration act the country has demographics for which two parties make no sense.
