This the weird Biarum carratracense (#Araceae) and you would just not believe how accurately the inflorescence imitates shit odour💩! Of course, the purpose is to attract flies to be pollinated. Evolution is incredible! It is endemic from S Spain and has a brief autumn flowering.

Taxonomy training is boring? Think again! Our #Plant #Identification course in Guinea is as hands-on and interactive as it gets - even the teachers get to show off their drawing skills! - and, in response, the students are not missing a beat. #PlantID for the win!

This may be useful now as many Rumex have seeds now but no leaves. I used it today to identify R. conglomeratus from a dried up skeleton of a plant. ⁦@BSBIbotany

Flowering and fruiting shots of the incredible Yellow Bird’s-nest this year in Midlothian - in central Scotland it associates with mining bings, substituting for its pinewood habitat in northern Scotland. Thanks @SueJury2 for the first pic!

Yellow Bird's-nest (Monotropa hypopitys) on wooded shores of Lough Gill: still exciting to find as #fruits. Its weird appearance gives it interesting names: 'Dutchman's Pipe', 'Pinesap'. An indirect parasite of tree roots, via fungal mycorrhiza, it doesn't need light to thrive.

It's kind of sad that in some islands with outstanding native plant diversity some alien/invasive species are promoted as tourist icons: examples from Sicily (prickly pear; Opuntia ficus-indica), New Zealand (Lupins; Lupinus sp.) and Canary Islands (Bird of paradise; Strelitzia)
