I'll save you from giving Uncle b*b money. You don't need to know category theory for functional programming (I don't, and I've been doing this full time for 6 years). There isn't a lot to it --it's a few ideas that have large consequences. Understand the ideas.

Winter has arrived. First dumping in town

I've had a fun day playing with FS2 and Cats-Effect and scaffolding out a new system. I don't get too many days like this and it was very fun. In an otherwise terrible day <<gestures broadly>>

I will never not schlep this cookbook when it comes across my screen: abebooks.com/servlet/BookDe… . If you live in the US, for $8 USD this is an approachable steal for of tasty things. I've been cooking from my copy since 2008 and my copy is held together by tape. A classic.

There is an entire class of work commonly referred to as "systems engineering" which is very interesting, fun, and in high demand / pays well at lots of companies. Don't settle for slop.

Your career will be either react slop, mobile slop, enterprise application slop, or CRUD slop That's what you're studying for

As a person who programs in Rust since 2016 I can tell you that Rust is a very safe, unergonomic language with annoying community and atrocious syntax. Which is somehow surprisingly miles better than modern C++.

Re-siliconing / removing grout / re-grouting a bathroom is the most pain in the ass thing I've done in a long time. I take back everything bad I said about legacy PHP codebases.

Last hike before going back to work in Sept. It has been a nice break! Stoked to be back in the world of pipelines, privacy, tokenization, CDC, and lakehouses. In scala of course.

Nice thing about getting older, and many years into a career change, is time to work on hobbies. Sometimes that rust/ts programming a virtual tabletop / tiling engine, sometimes that's hardware synths, and (new) picking up drawing again for the first time in 20 years.

First attempt at Malaysian roti was a success. Technique is tricky and I was gripping too hard, but still came out light and fluffy w/ good layers after being scrunched up

I am now approaching summer off's final boss: cracking the code on making a Malaysian roti at home. I want to figure this out so bad. RIP health/diet.

Time off work until it starts up again in September means elaborate lunches. Today: classic french. A carrot rappe salad w/ chickpeas, celeraic remoulade w/ homemade mayo, good cheddar, some baguettes I baked yesterday.... Life is good.
