Crypto has an irrefutable, good-for-society use case: cross-border money movement. The status quo fundamentally sucks. Too many parties and fees. A lot of plumbing and regulatory work needed, and I'm excited to see Stripe on it.

Stablecoins are room-temperature superconductors for financial services. Thanks to stablecoins, businesses around the world will benefit from significant speed, coverage, and cost improvements in the coming years. Stripe is going to build the world’s best stablecoin…

A California story: 🛣️ Car-centric growth sprawled into wooded areas 🔥 Homes destroyed due to climate change and mis-mgm't 💰 Insurance costs ⬆️⬆️ 😰 Voters capped prices → shortages as insurers flee 🔮 A new market will sell fuel reduction to insurers, as gov't allows

Overall, there is strong evidence that we can make a real impact on California's wildfire problem by devoting resources to hazardous fuel reduction efforts and by working to remove the regulatory and legal barriers in their way.

Yes!!! Welcome Hamdi 🌉❤️🚀

I am honored to work with the people of San Francisco to bring @AnchorBrewing, this dream, back to life.

Perk of having immigrant friends: they're oblivious to local fads. That helps you snap out of believing things that are short-term popular, but likely to be long-term silly.

Global settlement is a legit crypto use case. Cross-border transaction fees can easily cross 5%. Merchants know this and will incentivize change. Stablecoins and instant settlement remove the volatility and glaring UX friction of v1 crypto. Exciting times for modern finance!

Crypto is back. @Stripe will start supporting global stablecoin payments this summer. Transactions instantly settle on-chain and automatically convert to fiat. Join the waitlist stripe.com/use-cases/cryp… and watch the demo (h/t @Solana) from Sessions.

The US has a 1970's era environmental policy, designed to counter 1960's excesses. Big changes are needed to tackle 2020's problems!

The California Environmental Quality Act ensures that solutions to climate change take longer to get here than climate change.

I was recently asked to explain Baumol's cost disease. This thread does a far better job than I did.

don't want to dunk on some rando, but it's interesting to understand this is exactly backwards. the reason every home in america doesn't have a beautiful mosaic tile floor is precisely because americans are rich and productive this is counterintuitive but important to understand

America: where people from different places come together and do great things.

Texas will overtake California as the most populous state in 2039, with present trends. So many impacts. E.g. University of California will trend below UT in federal research funds, shifting the innovation pipeline to a pro-business state.

I think the causal direction has shifted over time from developers building housing where people are moving to people are moving where developers can build housing.

Predictions are hard. Especially about the future.

Mission Bay is the new SOMA / Palo Alto for startups. The ecosystem is flocking there.

Rare solar eclipse coming up. Almost as rare: an SF supervisor using common sense to solve important problems.

Everything we want to fix in San Francisco starts with safe streets. But we can’t fight crime with a spaghetti bowl of data. Solutions depend on good data — transparent and accessible crime data residents can trust. I led a hearing to see how we compare to other cities. As…

Immigrants get the job done

Thanks to immigrants, the US won 75% of Nobel prizes in 2023. Without them, we only would have won 25%. High skilled immigration is a policy lever for more innovation unlike anything else. Oh and its free.

Chris nails it again. - ADUs are clearly working b/c private markets can fund them - for housing to be affordable, it must be cheap to build more - most recent bills have too many labor and affordability requirements to work at scale - ending CEQA abuse for all projects is 💯

The narrative that renewables are now the cheapest form of energy just doesn't jibe with actual investment decisions. Always be skeptical of analysts without skin in the game.

Ørsted, world offshore wind leader, needs a giant jump in guaranteed prices or it's going to abandon its immense offshore wind farms off the US Eastern seaboard. In order to make wildly fluctuating power, they'll need promises of $150-200 per MWh. Yet Massachusetts, New Jersey,…

The more you look at zoning, the less sense it makes. City planners can't optimize for a future they can't predict. Obvious changes can't happen unless there's a political payoff involved. @mnolangray is right. The whole system needs to go.

If you'd like a fresh example of how zoning (a simple & fine idea) has become a micromanaging busybody that's accidentally tearing gashes in our civilization, here's one (thread)
