Next Week: Tropical trouble and a deep Central Plains trough. It is best if they remain separate entities unlike what happened with Hurricane Helene when the trough/cutoff absorbed the hurricane.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but model guidance with Invest 99L is ominous with potential for a major hurricane in the Caribbean in 5-7 days. GFS 18z goes bonkers with a Category 5 Hurricane Sara. And, that's not implausible at all. NHC at 90% chance of development

Major tree damage along Elk Mountain Scenic Highway in Asheville, NC. This is from Helene and there is some evidence this wind had rotation with it. It will be impossible to confirm if this was tornado damage or not though in my opinion.

Hurricane Rafael explodes into Category 3 monster with 115mph winds, currently hammering western Cuba. After Cuba, forecast shows a slow westward turn toward the central Gulf - seems less likely to threaten Florida. Energy staying high thru Friday before weakening this weekend.
