UK public debt: Oct 2023: £2,64trn, 97.8% of GDP Feb 2020: £1.791tn, 79.1% of GDP May 2010: £1.03tn, 65% of GDP Tories borrowed more than all Labour Govts combined. Squandered on tax cuts for corporations/rich, contracts for cronies. No new industries. Public services destroyed
US author Cormac McCarthy dies sad day, he illustrated in graphic form the way we humans can behave. bbc.co.uk/news/entertain…
Extraordinary that political parties are required to do so few checks on donations and that money can buy you anonymity in the UK courts for so long. Serious questions for @NCA_UK and the government which is resisting a Lords amendment to tighten up checks on donors.
📢In a crucial victory for open justice after amazing work by @martinbentham & @BBCNews, a major Tory Party donor, Javad Marandi, can now be named r.e a court case about the Azerbaijani Laundromat. The case raises urgent questions that need investigation: spotlightcorruption.org/major-conserva…
I have spoken to the Prime Minister to tender my resignation as Secretary of State for Health & Social Care. It has been an enormous privilege to serve in this role, but I regret that I can no longer continue in good conscience.
A London company owned by oligarchs from the former Soviet Union is suing me and my publisher @HarperCollinsUK over Kleptopia, my book about how dirty money is conquering the world. The first hearing was recently delayed but will now be at the High Court this Weds, March 2
🧵US Senior Admin Official, in call with reporters, said in addition to disconnecting key Russian banks from SWIFT, the US & Europeans agreed to launch a mutlilateral transatlantic task force to identify, hunt down and seize the assets of sanctioned Russian officials & oligarchs,
As the Rt. Hon Andrew Mitchell said to me only last Sept. when we were at his old college for a conference, ‘I tell everyone they should watch this fantastic documentary about the police, In the Line of Duty’. Series 7 keeps the same documentary style….
This is brutal. So powerfully done by @ByDonkeys and AC-12 cast. 😲
Welcome to my world John, sadly it’s not changing, if anything getting worse. Take a snapshot of the past decade of UK law enforcement (ex. SFO) fighting international corruption: 27 convictions bribery/money laundering etc. That’s 1st 5yrs, second 5 yrs 0 convictions and 1 UWO..
I’m a couple of years late (at least) but this, from @OliverBullough is absolutely essential reading. More so now than ever.
'It can be very hard to tease out populism that hovers near the borders of probity from a genuine slip over the precipice into state capture. We may have got so used to seeing corruption as a problem that happens to others, that we will not spot it until very late in the day.'

"They have broken the law... They have broken treaties... They have broken their word..." That's the view of a former Conservative PM on the current government. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-591889…
At the risk of repeating myself… They’re not ‘extra’ They’re not ‘additional’ And to suggest that they are is a lie. They don’t even come close to replacing the 44,000 officers and staff the government cut from policing between 2010 & 2018.
🚨 BREAKING 🚨 We've now recruited 11,053 extra police officers. 🇬🇧 We're delivering on our promise to the British people to recruit 20,000 additional police. They will cut crime and keep our streets safe. 👉🏽 joiningthepolice.co.uk
Too late, it’s gone on a nice getaway to the Caribbean, the new luxury car, and the fantastic lifestyle over the last 12 mths…..whilst many genuine business owners struggled.
£100m in funding in the budget for a "Taxpayer Protection Force" within HMRC to deal with...fraud again covid support schemes...that had minimal fraud checks built in. I say no more.
It is sadly of no surprise
#funkyfilings incoming. First the story: A group of four obscure companies received as much as £40m in funds under the UK’s coronavirus economic support schemes, despite little public evidence that the businesses have any staff ft.com/content/b3c703…
I've seen a lot of gongs handed out, some deserving, other not. If ever there are two people who we should place on a pedestal and say thank you, it's #rogerpaulinefitter just heard their amazing story on @BBCRadio4
