I'm often asked what it looks like to pitch an idea internally at 37signals. Since we don't do decks, or meetings, or long presentations, how is an idea actually presented? Very simply. As a tight, concise write-up published as a document in Basecamp. A few hundred words.…

I recently worked on a skeleton component that works with any layout automatically. You can render any real component with mock content, wrap it with a <Skeleton>, and any text, images, etc. get replaced with a shimmer effect. Waaaay easier than manually sizing rectangles. 😃

I'm excited to announce that I've figured out how to track component renders without having access to the components themselves and without mocking. 🎉 It's in this file: github.com/epicweb-dev/re… This is for testing the performance workshop exercises that optimize re-renders.

A few months ago, we changed the way we address bugs @linear We prioritized bugs over everything else. If you have bugs assigned when you wake up in the morning, you don't do anything else before they are addressed. This approach felt scary and quite radical, but our theory was…

Shopify increased their write throughput by 50% moving one of their MySQL keys from UUID to ULID. But How? When you make a purchase, Shopify guarantees idempotency by having the client uniquely tagging the request using UUID. If you accidentally replay the request and they…

When your "education" limits your imagination it's called indoctrination. Those who cannot think for themselves are truly lost. Education should be a rewarding experience which allows you to think, imagine, question, doubt and solve problems. 🧠

The worst product and engineering directors/executives I’ve worked with or observed shared this one thing: They refused to write their strategy and goals down and share it. Instead, they kept changing it on the go. Not writing down was a strategy to avoid accountability.
