This tweet has made my day.

Just saw a paper published in 2024 that claims a new analysis about a certain phenomenon challenging traditional ones, yet the new analysis is exactly what people from (at least) the 90's were saying... I mean, a google search was enough to see this.

Can any linguist here point me to how I can calculate surprisal from a corpus? If you know of a tool or library I can use (Python or R preferred), it'd be great! Thanks in advance! :)

having to climb up and down trees before i am even able to linearize them takes the cake for being the easiest workout though (most of the time)

If you consider yourself a speaker of English, check this out?

I don't normally beg for data, but anyone wanna help me collect some pilot data? 🥺 It only takes 10–15ish minutes. Self-identified speakers of English, please. Please do this task on a computer! Happy to explain the hypotheses by DM later. farm.pcibex.net/p/CaeQPT/

They should invent a profession where half the time you study texts in monastic solitude and half the time you talk animatedly to a room full of young people

JK what does this word mean? Which language is this, do you know it?

Every academic needs friends who have no idea what you research and don't care.

Ryan (@cogscidude) asked a question about whether the human mind is Turing-complete. There are different ways to take the question, but the most straightforward one illustrates how (IMO) we have lost sight of what *computation* is.

What I might have to tell myself over the PhD result season.

I just realized how gay syntax is, as I pressed Send to this text "You the goal and I'll send the probe" regarding an assignment where we thought we'd work together.

here I was fantasizing about languages with a default irrealis

If I were a language I would simply not have a subjunctive

I agree with the importance of documentation and revitalization. However, as someone who got into academic linguistics thanks to Tolkien, I think conlangs are also the easiest and most accessible way into linguistics for many people, especially now.

Here are 3 reasons why I hate conlangs: (conlang = “constructed language”, an invented language like Dothraki or Klingon or Na’vi or Esperanto) 1/14

I can't think of even prescriptively saying "It is he/she/they", when looking out the door and seeing a guest I was expecting. Is this rule present only for me vs. I and not for other pronouns?

This is actually a nice example of a widespread idea of how grammar works that's just... not well-founded. 1/
