out of you... you typically have to be an incredibly hard & talented worker in the first place, already producing a solid level of productive output.\n\nYou are not going to run into this person if you're just coasting. It\u2019s partly because you let the problem get to the point where everyone from the exterminator to the National Guard may need to be called in - but it\u2019s also because you\u2019re doing it wrong. If you\u2019re like most of the kids I\u2019ve known - including myself as a kid - here\u2019s what you end up doing. After hemming and hawing and putting your parents off to the last possible moment - in other words to the point when they assure you that if you don\u2019t get started, you\u2019ll be grounded until you\u2019re old enough to retire - you finally set to work. First, you take a plate from your room to the kitchen (hopefully while resisting the urge to finish the fuzzy green remainder of a sandwich that\u2019s still sitting on it). Then you take a gym sock to the hamper in the laundry room. Then you take the hedge trimmer to the garage (no questions asked). Then you take another plate, and possibly a fork, to the kitchen. Then the other gym sock and a dirty t-shirt to the hamper. Then a wrench with ketchup and mustard on it to the garage (again, no questions asked). How long will it take you to clean your room this way?\u201d\n\n\u201cForever!\u201d\n\n\u201cWhy?\u201d\n\n\u201cBecause you\u2019re not doing it in an organized way!\u201d\n\n\u201cOkay, so how could you organize the process?\u201d\n\n\u201cYou could get a container and take all the kitchen stuff to the kitchen at the same time.\u201d\n\n\u201cYou could get another container to take all the garage stuff to the garage.\u201d\n\n\u201cYou could take the hamper to your room, fill it with all of the dirty clothes, and then carry everything to the laundry room at once.\u201d\n\n\u201cExactly! You\u2019ll be making way fewer trips that way, and greatly reducing the amount of work involved. Okay, so math is much easier too when you attack it in an organized way. I\u2019m going to show you an unsimplified algebra expression and a simplified version of the same expression, and I want you to think about how this situation might be similar to cleaning your room.\u201d\n\nUnsimplified: y + x + x + y + z + x + z + z + z\n\nSimplified: 3x + 2y + 4z\n\n\u201cYou\u2019re just putting stuff together that belongs together, like the kitchen stuff, and the garage stuff, and the laundry stuff!\u201d\n\n\u201cBingo! Organization can make both math and life simpler.\u201d\n\nIf I had to pick the lesson that's been my students\u2019 favorite over the years, this would be it. So many of them have returned the next day to tell me that they applied the principle involved to clean their room the night before, and were stunned to find themselves having fun while doing so. (I always advise them to give themselves a time limit too - to turn the whole thing into a challenge - and to get some fast music going for some added inspiration.)
