It was the scariest thing I’ve ever experienced, a true nightmare, but I’ve come to love even those who were responsible because being shunned taught me to see the inherent beauty of each person. “We should be careful of each other, we should be kind, while there is still time.”
In my case, I read widely outside the perimeters of the group’s teachings and had correctly guessed that the leader was gay, a fact that he was desperate to keep hidden. There’s nothing wrong with being gay, obviously, but he, bless his heart, felt a deep sense of shame about it.

because there's something unspeakably precious about being human, and you don't realize how much your soul needs regular encounters with others until it's taken from you. It's so good to exist, so good to love, so good to be part of this world.
