As an ump, let me help explain this one: Rule 6.01(h): If a fielder is about to receive a thrown ball & if the ball is in flight directly toward & near enough to the fielder so he must occupy his position to receive the ball he may be considered “in the act of fielding a ball.”
For all those not familiar with the rule, a C can go into the baseline to receive the throw if that is where it takes him. It then becomes runner who must go around to avoid collision.
