There are now 7.5 million political prisoners in Hong Kong. Many can leave for now, including 300,000 Canadians living in the territory. But freedom from arbitrary detention an illusion after Beijing’s Stasi arrest media proprietor Jimmy Lai, champion of democracy & free speech.

My deepest respect to Apple Daily reporters who are continuing to stand firm, to do their jobs and to live-stream the monumental developments in their newsroom today despite the risks. A continuation of their true public service at the forefront of the protests last year. Humbled
Police set up a cordon line inside the office building of Apple Daily when they conduct a search in the newsroom. Apple Daily reporters have to stand behind the cordon line at their own office. There is a lil poster printed with “who’s afraid of the truth!”
Longtime #HongKong publisher arrested for daring to speak out against #ChineseCommunistParty - actually, for daring just to report the news. This is the “free speech” #China wants to force on the world
NOW: @JimmyLai, outspoken pro-democracy activist and owner of opposition newspapers @AppleDaily, has been arrested for "colluding with foreign powers" under the #NationalSecurityLaw in Hong Kong.
A reminder: there is no official press accreditation in Hong Kong. Under what rules are the police doing this?
Foloing 5 online media barred from police stand-up on arresting @studentlocalism ex-members, @StandNewsHK and InMediaHK were refused in @appledaily_hk HQs yard this morning for reporting - via InMediaHK.
After @appledaily_hk founder @JimmyLaiApple's arrest, over 200 PTU raided Apple Daily office without warrant. This is an unprecedented move. Deploying such disproportional amount of policemen to raid the office of a newspaper is a clear signal that HKSAR is oppressing free press
無懼打壓,堅持敢言,緊守崗位,我們會同香港一齊撐住。 @JimmyLaiApple @appledaily_hk
No foreign media is allow to enter the building according to police order. It show no respect to press freedom.
A @hkpoliceforce press liaison team member told reporters that police would only invite local, larger-scale news outlets, which did not pose obstruction or threats to police in the past, to a designated area closer to thr Next Digital office for reporting facebook.com/watch/?v=34077…
A Liverpool Fan shouted 利物浦萬歲(Glory to #Liverpool)in light of @LFC 's recent achievements. The police stopped and searched him for "Inciting HK Independence". Is this not ludicrous?
Sad day for Hong Kong. China's decision to enact this legislation constitutes a clear & serious breach of the Joint Declaration. UK will not look the other way. We will uphold our historic responsibilities & we will proceed to honour our commitment to those holding BNO status.
The water canon truck accurately spotted me, by myself and in full press gear, holding a phone behind a lamp post 🙄
If there is one city that refuses to sit by, idle and scared, while its freedoms are being dismantled, it is this one.

The PRC's human rights abuses in Xinjiang put businesses at risk of exposing their supply chains to forced labor and other abuses. Businesses must do their due diligence to avoid reputational, economic, and legal risks. Don’t be complicit.
I will have a press conference to announce what is the decision of my political asylum application made by the UK Government today, at 12:00pm British time (7:00pm Hong Kong time).
