This might sound really dumb when I say it out loud but boy have I been surprised by how much of "engineering effectiveness" in a huge company is just finding the really good humans in other teams, building personal relationships with them, and helping each other out.

Why larger teams move slower: Big changes require time-consuming work: 1. Meetings to reach concensus 2. Meetings to make a plan 3. Meetings to decide how to split the work & decide who does what 4. Meetings for demos On a team of 1 or 2, much of the overhead above is avoided.
Treat people nice. Don't take advantage of anyone. Pull them up when they're down / don't have a way up. Be grateful. ... and good things will happen.
