I’ll take any excuse to use a Hamilton song in my classroom!! Students learned about Hamilton’s Financial Plan today and I annotated “The Room Where It Happens” as they read the lyrics and we compared it to the reading we’d collaborated on a graphic organizer for.

We wrapped up our study of the Bill of Rights by examining primary source documents from Thomas Johnson and Luther Martin in Maryland to learn about the Federalist debate in Maryland. Students looked for text evidence for yes and no arguments to support ratification.

This week students participated in a Socratic Seminar to practice discourse and prepare for their summative on the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. This forum encourages dialogue and is student led. @StreetLawInc #TALCCS @CLBernard20 @UMSHawks

Civics in action. Voted as a family for the first time today- my husband and I brought our first time voter to the polls! And brought our daughter, the “Future Voter,” to observe the voting process for her Girl Scout badge “Behind the Ballot.” #Vote2024

Thanks for visiting my class @UMSHawks ! The Electoral College connection to the Constitutional compromises and its impact on the power balance of small state vs large is an important civics lesson for students today.

Amazing start to the day in the Hawk Nest! I visited Ms. Spahr’s 8th grade American Studies class. The focus was on Article 2 of the Constitution, the 12 Amendment & the Electoral College. Students were working on “safe” vs “swing” states. Timely lesson going into the election.

Students explored the Preamble of the Constitution today and made connections to the Articles of Confederation and what it means to us in today’s society. Each class also made their own summaries and a gallery walk. @UMSHawks

When you teach middle school and your Halloween costume is a throwback. In MY Middle School Era- the speaker was the best part of the costume 🔊🎶🎵. @NKOTB #1980s @UMSHawks

Tonight’s Girl Scout meeting was brought to you by the letter D for Democracy. The girls explored the Electoral College, levels of government and branches of government. When you’re a teacher and a leader you bring Social Studies out of the classroom to make tomorrow’s leaders!

Thank you Mr. Kibler @UMSHawks for visiting the National History Day Club and speaking to them on topics related to their experiences as students related to the theme “Rights and Responsibilities in History” @MDhumanities @CLBernard20

This year one of my goals has been to increase engagement- sometimes it’s as simple as handing the students the dry erase markers. Instead of a computer based assignment we read/annotated on paper, drew the chart in their notebooks and collaborated on the answers. @UMSHawks

Our AS1 classes have been working hard to learn about the American Revolution this week. Today they read an article on the strengths & weaknesses of both sides and collaborated on a graphic organizer. They also practiced mind mapping the battles and events as they learned them.

Today we celebrate the signing of the United States Constitution! Students read and annotated the Bill of Rights and looked for connections to the British Acts and Policies we’ve been learning about. Then we created Venn Diagrams as a class. @UMSHawks @CLBernard20

Today I increased student engagement through a simulation of the British Acts and Policies. Students were divided into roles, led discussions and paid their taxes by region as they learned how each one impacted them differently.
