The late journalist Neal Peirce was always on the road searching for promising policies, programs and ideas to write about in his syndicated newspaper column. That's why we offer journalists reporting travel grants. Apply here by Oct. 7: nealpeircefoundation.org/apply/

A New Orleans nonprofit takes chefs out to see firsthand how a disappearing shoreline impacts seafood production. @RoryDoylePhoto, a 2022 Neal Peirce Foundation grantee, got the story along with writer @BoyceUpholt for @BitterSouth bit.ly/3FuWHed

As a journalist, the late Neal Peirce traveled constantly, to meet face-to-face with civic leaders and see for himself what made communities work better. That's why we offer journalists reporting travel grants. Apply here by Oct. 16: nealpeircefoundation.org/apply/

Excited to have the @ANCInnovation #iteams' work highlighted in @BloombergCities Spark. Learn more about a project to get the latest info to small businesses via the Anchorage Small Biz Alerts using SMS texts. Providing timely info, self-help, and one-on-one help. @cswope

When #Anchorage @MayorEthananc needed to get critical recovery information to businesses, he tapped the city's #iteam. Learn how @ANCInnovation used its expertise to develop a text messaging tool that is helping engage more than 700 small businesses: buff.ly/3fVoHZf

.@GuadalajaraGob is showing cities around the world how to squeeze petty #corruption out of permitting & licensing. Click through to the report - it's a great read on how low-level bribes happen and how to stop it. bit.ly/2O7oEif

Important research related to a group of public servants whose work we don't do enough to recognize: the people who answer the call when you dial 911.

Handling 911 calls is a stressful job with high turnover rates. A new study from @B_I_Tweets finds building a sense of belonging among dispatchers can help. @ElizabethLinos of @UCBerkeley’s @GoldmanSchool explains why here: bit.ly/35TVNnE

Thanks to @chrismichaelgdn and the rest of the @guardiancities team for showing us what the best in urban journalism looks like.

Well, that's it comrades. After six years @guardiancities is closing up shop. It's been an incredible honour and privilege: the best job in journalism, for a few reasons I wanted to mention briefly (1/11) theguardian.com/cities/2020/ja…

So happy to hear it when great ideas spread from one city to another and to play even the smallest role in helping that happen!

2/2 @accgov saw the project from a @FastCompany article inspired by a Bloomberg Spark @cswope article w/help from @rolandpersaud The work was inspired by @codeforamerica's work w/SMS texting, @mRelief_form, @Durham_iteam, @twilio,.. Pay it forward Share! fastcompany.com/90403496/this-…

Mayors are on the front lines on advancing economic opportunities for their residents, and in our talk at last week’s #RFASummit, @GTBynum, @mayorcantrell, and @CityRochesterNY’s Mayor Warren nailed it on why this work is so important. Check it out: bit.ly/2MmrNZK

#LocalGov innovation sometimes involves emerging tech. But more often it involves creative no-tech, low-tech and even old-tech interventions to address challenges in new ways. That’s why I love seeing ideas like this one from #Anchorage. Check it out: bit.ly/2kbZIKF

Best news I've heard all week! Glad to be able to keep reading @GreeneBarrett's keen insights on all things state and local.

For #CityHallSelfieDay the Swopes visited Montreal's beautiful hotel de ville. Love the family friendly separated bike lanes here and the pop up sidewalk cafes. Truly a city that's not afraid to innovate in how public spaces can be used for people over cars. @BloombergCities

So sad about this news! I'm honored to have been part of the Governing family for 14 of those 32 years, and to have worked with so many talented journalists there. Thinking also about the readers in state & local govt who deserve a product this good to stay smart.

After 32 years, the magazine of record for state and local government will discontinue operations. Read more: bit.ly/2MO92Ao
