Dr. Nkrumah was the first president of a formerly colonized African nation, and he invested heavily in modernizing Ghana. He funded national industrial and energy projects and developed a strong national education system.

In 1965 Dr. Nkrumah published his book “Neo-Colonialism—The Last Stage of Imperialism”, which called out the US for exploiting Africa. After the publication of the book, the US sent him a formal letter of protest & refused $35 million in assistance to Ghana.

Dr. Nkrumah developed strong connections with African American leaders as part of his attempt to advance the cause of all African peoples. He hoped to help transform Africa into a center of science, technology, & modern innovation after throwing off the shackles of colonialism.
