Organizers chanted “all smiles, no swipes” and offered students plastic cups, plates and utensils to reduce the workload of Ortega employees. dailynexus.com/2020-03-09/all…
On day 8 of the UCSB COLA strike, organizers have taken over the Ortega Dining Commons, offering undergraduates a swipe-free meal as they chanted “all smiles, no swipes” to students coming in for lunch.
The strikers are now marching to Henley Gate, where they plan to continue the rally.
Graduate students have stationed people on every floor of Cheadle Hall.
After talks with police officers and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Margaret Klawunn, organizers have stopped blocking the doors and have moved inside the building and are chanting “Don’t cross the picket, don’t be a scab” at people entering the building.
Several police officers have showed up. “I just want to let everyone standing in front of a door know that everything we are doing right now is totally legal,” one organizer said through a megaphone to the others.
“You’re infringing on our liberties,” someone yelled in return.
Several people have tried to force their way past the organizers. “Attention people, this does not need to get physical; if you don’t put your hands on us we won’t put our hands on you,” one organizer at the back of Cheadle Hall announced to administrators and staff watching.
Staff and administrators are attempting to enter the building, but organizers are holding firm in not letting people in, although they have said they will let people who are already in the building leave.

Graduate students are blocking entrances to Cheadle Hall today as part of the COLA movement work stoppage, which UC campuses across the system are holding today.
At each campus, COLA movements are urging faculty to cancel all classes and undergraduate students to walk out of any classes that professors didn’t cancel. dailynexus.com/2020-03-05/col…
