Blinken and Austin demanded that Israel surge aid to Gaza and gave Netanyahu a 30-day deadline that is up today. Humanitarian organizations say Israel has "failed to follow through, bringing the Palestinian enclave to the brink of mass starvation." washingtonpost.com/world/2024/11/…
COP29 is kicking off and the biggest issue on the agenda is climate finance. Nearly 200 states must agree on a new goal to help developing nations tackle climate change. They disagree on nearly every issue I've outlined key disputes & dividing lines ⬇️ carbonbrief.org/cop29-what-is-…
You trolling us, @metoffice?
Have you seen any glimmers of sunshine this afternoon or are you stuck underneath this blanket of cloud? 🤔
Words: "Climate change is intensifying the water cycle. This brings more intense rainfall and associated flooding" (IPCC) Pictures: "A woman looks out from her balcony as vehicles are trapped in the street after flooding in Valencia" (AP/Alberto Saiz)
It may not feel like it but average temperatures at this time of year in the UK are similar to the middle of May. Here is a #dataviz showing periods of equal average temperatures.
Day one of the SALIENT structured expert judgement meeting at @CSAGUCT being kicked off today by @_RachelJames, Chris Jack & @tinanane Exciting 3 days lie ahead with our #climatescientists who are experts in southern African climate. Today is all about the calibration questions!
Second day of the SALIENT structured expert judgement meeting. The climate scientists have given their estimates to the questions of interest and are busy discussing the mechanisms of change, sources of information and #uncertainty drivers.

Increasing temperatures cause the humidity of the air to also increase. As the air contains more water, when it rains, it rains more. This 'causal chain' is clearly observed in changes to UK climate, leading to more intense rainfall, increasing the risk of local flooding.

20yrs ago Valdes moved to Bristol and our climate/biochemistry group (BRIDGE) was born. We celebrated our anniversary by bringing back many of our alumni. I love co-leading the group with @OceanFMonteiro - life is a lot of fun when you have such friendly and exciting colleagues❤️
two ipcc authors wrote a paper for kids that was peer-reviewed by some teenagers and the level of frankness is something a lot of climate scientists could learn from
We often focus on global temperatures, but land regions where we all live have been warming much faster. For #showyourstripes day, here are land, ocean, and global climate stripes shown on the same color scale:
Not only have ocean temperatures been hotter than ever for 12 months straight, each anomaly looks 10* higher than previous isolated record months! If this doesn't have you #shittingbricks (apologies, but really!!), I don't know what will. climate.copernicus.eu/copernicus-may… #climatecrisis
No pledge by Labour to maintain or increase the climate finance the UK sends to the global south. That makes it the only major national party not to make such a commitment. Just commits to "unlocking" climate finance and increasing foreign aid when "fiscal circumstances allow"
