📣 We call on States gathering in Baku for COP29 to reject this attempt by the Supervisory Body to move forward these documents without States’ approval or any discussion with Parties of the Paris Agreement. @COP29_AZ don't set up the tone of #COP29 with such a BAD start.

⚠️ UNACCEPTABLE: The mandate to the #Article6o4 Supervisory Body was to present recommendations to Parties for their consideration. Not to say “it's done” but “please, let us know what you think of this”. Now it may be that these are approved on Day one, with no discussion.

However, in a dangerous move at its final meeting before #COP29, the Supervisory Body took an unprecedented step of “finalizing” its standards on methodologies & removal activities and claimed they immediately took effect – bypassing countries' approval.

There are two documents concerning methodologies and activities related to removals, which the Supervisory Body is supposed to present to States for approval during #COP29, allowing for discussion & potential rejection by States. Read more: ciel.org/wp-content/upl…

🤓 Reminder 🤓 #Article6o4 of the Paris Agreement established a new intl. carbon crediting mechanism. The Article 6.4 mechanism has a Supervisory Body tasked with developing and supervising the requirements and processes needed to operationalize the mechanism.
