So grateful to have defended my dissertation with friends and family in the audience and with such a supportive committee guiding me along the way (chaired by the truly amazing @daphnabassok). Sad to be closing this chapter, but excited to begin the next with @MathematicaNow!

So exceedingly proud of DOCTOR @WalterHerring, who just defended his dissertation: "Using Emerging Data from the Early Elementary Grades to Inform Decision-Making." Such excellent work from such an excellent human and key member of our team. Congrats, Walter! @UVAEdu @UVABatten

Great stuff as usual from @ABA: I love the practice of naming a Bird of the Year, and the Burrowing Owl is just an excellent choice. Gorgeous artistic renditions as well, makes me even more excited to see one for myself in 2022

Burrowing Owl is the 2022 ABA Bird of the Year!

Was incredibly startled to see Clippy show up in my R window today spouting empty text boxes. Have I been hacked?? What is it trying to tell me??

If anyone out there is struggling with their dissertation title, might I recommend something along these lines

A student submitted their research paper to me via a google doc and named the doc "big ole research boi" 😂

I really don't get this. States already do this using more granular data and often more measures of school performance (growth, attendance, etc.). Pardon the pun but what is the value-add here?

Pleased that @BrookingsEd featured work with Anita McGinty, @heyallisongray, Ann Partee, and @jsoland Our report highlights the important role that literacy screeners can play in providing visibility to trends and inequities in the critical early grades.

Over one-quarter of kindergarten and first-grade students in Virginia were considerably behind in early literacy skills at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year. Read more: brook.gs/3kN6oMj

🎉🎉🎉A hearty congratulations to my grad school cohort-mate @brhkim for receiving the NAEd/Spencer dissertation fellowship! Some very well-deserved recognition for a wonderful friend and colleague conducting amazing research.

Just wildly, deeply, unbelievably grateful to share this good news. It has absolutely taken a village of teachers, family, friends, colleagues, institutional partners, and mentors along the way. I just hope not to let them down! So much work to do, woof. But also, celebrations!

Very saddened by Larry McMurtry's passing. I did not really read recreationally until I picked up one of his novels in college. His books have accompanied me through many phases of my life, and reflecting now I appreciate how much I learned from his rare combo of wit and empathy.

Larry McMurtry, prolific novelist and screenwriter whose credits include “Lonesome Dove” and “Brokeback Mountain,” and who demythologized the American West with his unromantic depictions of life on the 19th-century frontier, has died at 84. nyti.ms/3fgJlqd
