Who else thinks their city should do this?

Every winter city needs Oulun Konetyos. They’re contractors from the city w the world’s best winter cycling paths. They have a twitter account. Its got pictures of trucks, plows and staff in bikes. Bio says “we’re a maintenance business specializing in bike & pedestrian paths.”

Näemmä @OulunKonetyo päivän tarkistuskierroksella testaamassa jypyttääkö (muutoin täydellisessä) pinnassa oleva aaltoliike pyllyyn😃. Mites sun kaupungissa, vaaditaanko teillä urakoitsijalta tasaista pintaa ja käykö urakoitsija oma-aloitteisesti valvomassa omaa aikaansaannostaan?

Normally, we all ride together on Friday. After a pandemic, we also celebrate on Saturday. But not this year. Not without Ukraine. Soon we'll all ride together. Meanwhile, support #BikesForUkraine. Read how and why: WinterBiketoWorkDay.org

A thread about an interesting theory called Marchetti’s Constant. I learned this from my friend @SwansonAnders - It is a great conversation starter for your next party.

In light of a recent storm near me, the poor conditions afterward and some sad news in my city, a friendly reminder to us and other cities like ours: cities w large numbers of people cycling in winter are already normal and develop naturally when you commit to it and do it right:

Some may think grocery shopping by bike is hard in winter. The reality is mundane and beautiful. This is a thread about shopping for 2 weeks' worth of groceries, in winter, during a pandemic, when a snowstorm hits in #Oulu the world's winter cycling capital.

Estonia to start subsidizing cargo bikes - probably a more efficient form of government spending than subsidies for electric cars. @UT_moblab news.err.ee/1608799822/sta…

Planners take heart. In cities like this that are getting most things right, people actually write enthusiastic tweets about those most fascinating of conversation starters: zoning.

I know Oulu abd I don’t really know what all this is about, but this guy is director of this far northern Finnish city’s “Community and Environmental Branch” and this trail looks fantastic and the translated comments are great and is probably going to be perfect year round.

"As reported by The Globe and Mail, residents spent a total of $181 million at curbside patios within 13 weeks of summer in 2021. If those spaces had remained dedicated to parking, only $3.7 million would have been reaped during the same time period."

The 2023 Winter Cycling Congress host city was just awarded the best medium-sized bike city in Sweden, by Cykelfrämjandes satisfaction survey. Hope to see you all there 22.-24. Feb 2023! 🤗🥰

Yesterday Karlstad was awarded “best medium sized bike city” in Sweden by Cykelfrämjandes satisfaction survey. The survey is carried out every second year and reviews and compare what the cyclist in the different municipality in Sweden thinks. Hope to see you here in February! ❄️

Anatomy of winter city built for cycling. And 98% of these paths are maintained through the winter.

I've often said we have 875 km of safe segregated bicycle paths in #Oulu, ie. 4,25m per every resident. If you had your doubts, you were correct. I was wrong. It's difficult to find exact numbers but with @harrivaarala we've now counted that it's at least 943 km. #meanwhileinOulu

I see close calls nearly every day I go out. Its normal in my city to see car debris like chunks of headlights or fenders in the road. This summer, I was first responder for a young woman who got hit on Ellice Today, I’m voting for people who know “one more lane” is killing us.

Tonight’s replies to a tweet about a pedestrian being killed in a vehicle collision this morning. The fourth in Winnipeg in two weeks.
