I finally finished editing my newsletter. Twitter, please be gentle. I wrote about gun control and how state knows how to restrict gun rights' for communities of color. (You know: light topics). smrushford.substack.com/p/theres-been-…

Key points from police report on Hegseth's alleged sexual assault: -it was first reported by a nurse, not the accuser -accuser suggested she might have been drugged -2 other women at the event said Hegseth placed a hand on their thighs and invited them up to his hotel room

Important note for reporters covering the GOP's effort to ban trans women from bathrooms on Capitol Hill: while Sarah McBride and Nancy Mace both have private bathrooms in their offices, the trans people who are not elected officials who have to work there every day do not.

Can all the editors promise me there will be no “I have to deal with my Trump uncle at the holidays” think pieces a la 2016? Fun fact, you don’t have to go.

The largest worksite raid in history, at a meatpacking plant in MS in 2018, led to 680 arrests. It took dozens of agents, months of planning, thousands of man-hours, and likely cost several million bucks. Keep that in mind when the administration starts touting splashy numbers.

W/out the ability to carry out “mass deportations” on day 1, one of the flashiest ways to make it look like you’re doing mass deportations are “workplace raids” These raids tend to only target the workers & not the employer who hired and often is taking advantage of the workers

Stop it with the “Sotomayor should retire tomorrow.” Honestly, shut the fuck up. Trump is going to replace Alito and Thomas with 40 year olds. 6-3 forever vs 7-2 forever doesn’t make much difference. And if the court defies him he will ignore it anyway.

Sherrod Brown *is* a progressive populist who has championed organized labor, introduced a bill to ban corporate investors from buying up housing and opposed NAFTA. He lost to a MAGA car salesman! This is my point! If all it took to win were good policy, he would have.

That completely ignores the polling showing that people massively favor populist, anti-corporate elite policies. It’s just that there is no party pushing them. The hard right shift has been in the Democratic party leadership over the past four decades or so. Imo.

The challenge, after a loss, is to learn something *new.* Most people aren't doing that right now. They're taking in information and trying to fit that within their prevailing world view. The NEW thing I'm learning is: People do not and will not vote for harm mitigation...

Despite everything, I'm so grateful that the Harris campaign introduced America to Tim Walz and his entire family. I genuinely hope that his model of masculinity serves as a positive example for young men in desperate need of one.

Patience, people!!!

SHORT STORY FOR PENNSYLVANIA. Many rural counties are >95%+ done counting. Montgomery County is only at 50% so far & all the Philadelphia Suburbs still have *hundreds of thousands* of votes to count. This is gonna take time. Patience, people.

A Dem hold in a key House district:

AP calls #NY18 for Democratic Rep. Pat Ryan. He's three times prevailed in a Hudson Valley seat during a pretty rough climate.

The only reason this didn’t pass is because these are ridiculous heights and they’re cheating. 57% is enough in any other state. My heart goes out to the Florida organizers, abortion funds and providers, who put their everything into this campaign. They won. The state cheated.

Florida’s abortion rights ballot measure, Amendment 4, will NOT pass, @DecisionDeskHQ projects. It needed 60% to pass. Abortion in FL will remain banned after 6 weeks.
