Machine learning is just statistics

In 5 words or less, start a fight without politics

Working late is a luxury

One of those weird nexus days when Tennessee politics twitter and the Seattle AI ethics twitter intersect

In his defense, the @nytimes + friends can't fathom women being THE experts on any tech related stuff, and would rather platform randos talking about bombing data centers. Seems to be a policy.

Thank you, @alex I'm fully fed up with this pattern. I came up with that phrase, and used it (with my co-authors) in our paper. But then someone with a lot of fame & reach used it to say something very misguided and how it gets cited as if it were his.

@ezraklein You know that @emilymbender coined the term "Stochastic Parrots," right? Altman's use of the phrase flimsy deployment is part of his overestimating the complexity of the machine and underestimating the complexity of the brain.

Hoping that all of the attention on the Tennessee three will shine a light on the avalanche of bullshit these Dem legislators deal with every. single. day. from the supermajority

It bears repeating in this moment. Think about what you saw and understand that our legislature not only protected a confessed child molester; they gave him their obedience motherjones.com/politics/2018/…

To all those folks asking why the "AI safety" and "AI ethics" crowd can't find common ground --- it's simple: The "AI safety" angle, which takes "AI" as something that is to be "raised" to be "aligned" with actual people is anathema to ethical development of the technology. >>

The one of the greatest gifts of my graduate education in science is learning how not to overestimate the impact of my mathy maths

But the #AIhype is making it harder to do that work. When AI bros say their mathy maths are completely general solutions to everything language & people believe them, folks working on the actual details of language, lg use, functioning lg tech have to first push through that. >>

I honestly believe that no one actually likes coleslaw and it’s all a hoax perpetrated by lobbyists working with Big Cabbage According to my research, 82% of coleslaw is consumed by people hoping that this coleslaw might be the “good coleslaw” they keep hearing about.

Why is coleslaw still a thing? Does anyone really like coleslaw in 2022?
