Moves announced in last week's Autumn Budget to give mayors more powers more control over budgets are welcome, but in a new @instituteforgov blog I argue that attention also needs to be paid to local accountability arrangements 🧵

My take for @instituteforgov A genuinely big budget that aligns the government’s fiscal numbers more closely with their rhetoric and ambition instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/rachel…

More details on local government finances: - Core spending power to increase by 3.2% in real terms in 2025/26 - That's pretty much exactly in line with the average annual increase of 3.1% per year since 2019/20

For local places to do this well, they need to know more about central govt's growth strategy, inc the industrial strategy, and what powers and funding they have. This is where getting the sequencing right is so important [see crazy graphic, h/t @melissaittoo] 5/10

If devo agenda is to take a different (sustainable, inclusive) course, then also centre-local relations must do the same. As long as Treasury orthodoxy & top-down impositions persist, no real change will happen. inews.co.uk/news/politics/…
