putting andrew garfield - an eloquent, endearingly opinionated guy - in the same room with one of hollywood's most cynical company men/capitalists could either be really fascinating or an hour spent staring into the abyss.

we can get swamped by the idea our art has to mean something, get us somewhere, elevate us - I'm trying to fall back in love with storytelling for what it was to me, something that allowed my imagination to flow when I was a child, to play, to excite myself. That's true art.

it could not be more obvious that the reason certain men are getting so angry at dr ally louks is that she's beautiful and evidently they could never have her and the phd itself is emblematic of the shifting social power dynamics that explain WHY they can't get her

Conservative contempt for academia, beyond being indicative of an inability to read above a 3rd grade level, genuinely stems from the growing sentiment that universities should be replaced by glorified trade schools that pump out business, engineering, and comp sci graduates

Since there is some confusion about the nature of my research, here is the abstract for my PhD thesis, which I hope will provide more context for anyone interested in learning more about my work!

If you know deep down you have spiritual gifts & a big, wild mission to carry out during your lifetime.. I think it's time you stop playing with that. Time to get real about what you're here to do. Trust me, it only gets more fun when you own who you really are.

everytime a book gets adapted into a movie, they start using the movie poster as the book cover and it's honestly the ugliest thing in the world

There's nothing wrong with identifying with various aesthetics, like "punk" or "flowery" or "rainfrilled," but if your only form of "oppression" is having people not place that identification on the same level as gendered oppression, you can't be offended at the "erasure."

No one moderates their interactions with you, consciously or unconsciously, based on whether or not you are "cluttercute" or "lacedecorated." You are not barred from employment, ejected from your home, or subjected to violence on the basis of "sealacean" aesthetics.

"Gender is a social construct" doesn't mean gender is *anything*. It means that gender is a set of socially reinforced heuristics that are used to enforce particularized norms. The niche identities listed are aesthetics, not relations to the construction of gender.

“gender is a social construct” until gender is a social construct

dislike how censorious people get about art for a few reasons but here's a big one - the best art, to me, is the art that most totally encapsulates the contradictions of its context, all the dynamics, in all its complexity. the way people talk about art now doesn't allow for that

Well he would say that etc. I don't simply mean that he's a paid shill, but that privatisation is founded on the ideological belief that the political is a narrow realm. What he can't accept is that the failures of the market have necessitated a political solution.

"Nationalisation is the wrong answer. It's a political rather than a practical solution." Andy Bagnall from Rail Partners, which represents the parent companies of operators, tells #R4Today, as MPs are set to vote on a bill to take railways back into public ownership.
